Motorbreath's Sins or Skins? (big pics)

These trailers (more reskins of Dinorius_Redundicus' stuff) are a couple of freelanced goodies I slapped together, obviously due to my love for EK3. These are waiting for approval for the DLS, they are my first attempt at uploading updated assets for 2010, so we'll see what happens.

Not to be a Gimme-pig, but mtotorbreath, could you e-mail the 40 ft skins to garrbear 3 @gmail. com? I can't access the dls.

Jimi

Compliments on the new trailer skins. Those Fruehauf's have a life of their own it seems.

Regarding the ground textures, can I make a plea? If you're doing any rockfaces with a stratified structure to them, could you make sure the strata are consistently 'horizontal' on the texture image? This makes it easier to know the orientation of the strata when doing the walls of cuttings and cliffs etc.

It's a bit hard to explain in words, but if the layers are 'horizontal' in the image, then they will also be horizontal on the cliff face if the little texturing compass tool points either directly up or down. Having the layers at other angles in the image can of course be compensated for with the compass tool, but it just takes extra time to work out what angle they will be on the ground.

Cheers

Yessir, I have been trying to orient them square when possible, although I think the lines are more verticle... Put it this way, I make the texture appear upright and as straight as possible according to the original photo.

Also, I have again enjoyed playing around with your creations. :)

Ok, the trailers seemed to have worked and are on the DLS. I'll try to sort out the textures and upload them today or tomorrow as time permits.

So for the textures, how do you go about editing them so you don't notice the tiling? Clone tool on the edges?

Also, what resolution do you use?

22 new grass and rock textures are now waiting for approval for the DLS, if all goes well they will be up soon.

Most of the grass and soil textures are simply selected and/or cropped to minimize the tiling effect, mostly so they have no sharp edges compared to the center of the pic. So if you do use the textures with no rotation, they will be slightly tiled looking, but maybe not as obvious as others. Adding a little rotation and blending will produce a pretty nice effect. I also recommend using the grass and soil textures with the size set to minimal in surveyor.

The rock textures are a bit more prone to tiling, but as you can see in the images I have posted, blending a few together and using different sizes of the same textures will produce some pretty convincing rock faces. There are a few I made specifically to be used with others in the collection with similar colors, and a few that can either be blended or used on their own.

All of the textures use a 1024 x 1024 image for optimal resolution, although some are better than others. For the most part I tried to avoid stretching the images, and the few that are stretched are not stretched much. I tried to be very nit-picky with my final selections for upload. About 10 versions were trashed due to lower standards.

A few more on the way to the DLS.

I labeled all of my textures with the prefix "JR". I did not consider the similarities to Jointed Rail when I did so, and I hope it does not cause any confusion. JR is my initials, and I add that to my WIP's.

Wow these look good JR ROFL, Thanks for making them Jimi i'll be downloading them for sure mate.
Cheers Mick.

Motorbreath,

The textures look really nice, and i would love to download them. Before I do though, could you tell me what version they are for? They are listed on the DLS as being for 2009, however you don't appear to have a copy of '09 (a registered copy, anyway.)

Could you please confirm what version they were created for?

Cheers,

Matt.

Thanks, Matt and Mick. They were cloned with permission from an 09 3rd party texture, so I left the 09 build number in hopes they will work for 09. So try one and let me know if it works if you wish.

Also as a note to folks using these... Blending is the key in some of the rock textures. I have found that if you get a tiled looking border between 2 squares, either of same or different textures, especially if you are not using the rotate [] keys in order to get a good clear rock face, try using the smallest radius and the rotate key right down the seam of the 2 squares. You can make a really bad looking rock face if you just slap it up there some times, especially with some of the more defined textures with more contrasting colors. Pick at least 3 with similar colors and play digital geologist.

I've got a few textures waiting to be processed, and a few more to upload. About 50 or so in all. I decided not to name them with my initials (JR) to avoid any confusion. The new ones all have a prefix of "RRM".

Thanks. I uploaded about 35 last night. Also, I forgot to mention the awesome pics I used for the water one were sent to me by Dricketts. I would not have considered doing water until then, and now after seeing Joosten's route in progress, I look forward to experimenting with more.

Looking good Jimi, Wish you had of stuck to the JR part as i'll have to look in two spots now LOL.
Cheers Mick.
