ok first this isn't my route, its a fellow Jr member
but I do build routes and here is my advice to you is practice makes perfect, and it takes a lot of trial and error. Just don't give up
Also takes a positive attitude and a relaxed setting of mind, to be able to let the mind wander to be able to vision the scenes you wish to build, as well as making them follow through with how you want it to.
Because this is what this game is all about, unique individuality.

I am not very good, but plan your routes, or at least have an idea, like "I want a rotary dumper here" or "The engine shed should go here".
For What Its Worth
There are a few ways one can build a layout
1) FROM SCATCH This means sit back at your computer close your eyes and clear your mind and start laying track
2) sit down and scratch out a plan on paper and go with that
3) Start buying the "Model Railroader Magazine and try some of those plans
4}If you live close to a very interesting Rail line and shunting yards then you could model that ( Shunting yard = Fiddle yard )
5) Download a Very cool Layout Like Man cave, Emily bay, Donut, Hobby Table, The Basement
These are the places I like to spend driving and just loseing myself for a few hours when I run out of
"What Should I Do With My Route"' because sometimes I run out of ideas
Clone one of you Faverate layouts and recreate it for you
But if you do and you put up pics to show the rest of us what you have been up to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't forget to say whose route it was origeinally
6) Have some relaxing Music playing in the back ground( I like to listern to country music with a train Theme in it
This is What I do so how you go about it is up to you but above all HAVE FUN AND RELAX This is a hobby

A tiny bit more work done here. Did take out Felix's little scene for some more ground level storefronts, and I don't know if I should have 4 tracks, or just 2? Anyone's opinions?

It looks like he took some of the 12x6m retaining walls and put JR track on them...
Fluffinator, you know there are some lattice style bridges on the DLS, right? Search 'Subkit' and look for the ones that say lattice. Just something to look into if you want to get closer to the real layout.

@JackieG, It's a combination of Jointed Rail's light grey track (Regular, not terrain, or JR Lt Grey) at a spline height of X. Then, there are 2 retaining walls (12x6m Brown) at a height 0.33 below X. So, for this picture, the track is set to 8, and the retaining walls are set to 7.67. The bridges are the YR Bridge Plate Decks just over the roads, and I tried to have everything line up so the sidewalks would not be blocked.
@AMTRACKwannabe, I remember someone making a freeware post regarding Austin's new subkit splines a little bit ago, although I haven't gotten them yet. I've still been looking for a more detailed road, (I have all of Yarn, Yarnish and AASHTO), although I'll download the subkit tonight and mess around with it. Also, the retaining walls are there so I don't have to go in and fill everything under the bridges, although that might be done eventually? I've still got a long way to go on the route, but I am liking the look of it!
Might actually finish a presentable route for once, lol. I've got a long way to go before I can rival Kimo, Deadpool, Felix or Conrail!

On my absolute wish list is Malcolm Furlow's San Juan Central from Model Railroad magazine 1980's. I wore the print of the book because I looked at it so much. A while ago some one started to build it for Trainz and we have never herd a peep again. I would Love to see this project done. Any thoughts or has anyone worked on this project. It looks like the Retaining walls are Lielestosbrats and the girder bridges are by Wawasoo
