Minor Advice on TS09 and TS12

I just cannot seem to figure out a couple of things on these new versions.
One is that when I want to raise a building, the gage has a + sign and the heights move in one-foot increments.
Nearly all the static assets are made that way. The splines seem to work okay in this respect so there's no trouble.
How could I make those move a little easier and smoother like using the TS2004 version ??

I thought there was two but this is all for now. Thank-you for your help.

Thank-you both for the quick response. I have tried the control and the shift keys for these and they have worked
just fine. I have just now had the other question come up about the storage of the assets for TS12. As it is always
nice to have all the assets for a special route, I wonder where they all go once the route has been loaded.
I've searched every folder in the program files area where the game is loaded and cannot find an asset file. Two
thoughts I've had were 1) They are kept on-line somewhere and we have access to our private little (big) files for the
routes and other libraries. or 2) they are listed on my C:\ drive in a place I haven't gone yet. (the game is on a H:\
peripheral drive using USB3.)

Anyone have an answer for the storage ??

They are on your Trainz drive in TS12\Userdata\Local and Userdata\original stored in hash folders in a non user editable format, in other words leave them alone. Assets can only be opened by using content manager. If you need to backup which is always a good idea, then backup those two folders. Individual assets or bunches of them you can save to cdp which works or archive them which doesn't always work.

So put simply if I wanted to save a route plus dependencies, I'd save the route to cdp, then list the dependencies and save all the non builtins to cdp, don't go above around 500MB's though and put them somewhere safe.

In actual fact you'd probably need to track down dependencies of dependencies as well so in practice I just backup those two folders daily.

A good suggestion, Malc, to back up daily. Unfortunately my recent attempts to back up Userdata 2010 have failed - I can't remember the message giving the reason off hand but it was something to do with not being able to access something or other so I've resorted to making CDPs on removable media!

Well now, Malc, I have amassed a few more than 500mb through the "user data/original" folder. I did check on both and for the record,
my TS12 still runs okay. A little bumpy though, but no issues. My total storage for the "original" folder is 13GB and the "local" folder is
3.7GB. I haven't backed up anything yet since I had no idea where to look til now. I can put 4gb on a data DVD but that is just a
piece of what I'm doing. Not much of a rescue.

One thing I would like to know is what sort of upgrade I could expect from here since the video card is about 4-5 years old.
It's an nVidia GT8800 and I have a 64bit quad-4 processor. What kind of card should I go with to get good performance??
It works fine but I need something a bit better.

Thanks to you, too, Ray for the advice and I hope we can talk again.

You might want to invest in one of those inexpensive external hard drives. You can pick up a 2 TB drive for about $110 these days from Staples or BestBuy, or any big electronics store in your area. They are worth it as a backup medium and to transfer your Trainz install to another computer. I simply back up my complete D:\N3V\TS12 install to my backup drive. When I replaced my failed internal hard disk, I then copied the complete install back over again from the external to the internal drive. It took some time due to USB versus SATA, but the process wasn't painful. For backups I use FastCopy which is available here: http://ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en Don't get alarmed with the download link being in Japanese!. There is both a 64-bit and a 32-bit version. Choose the 64-bit now that you have a 64-bit OS installed because it's a bit faster.

Regarding video cards. Since you've already installed a GT8800, which was a great card in its day, I recommend sticking with NVidia unless you are completely redoing your operating system again. Depending upon your budget, you might look for something in the higher-end of the 600s or mid-level 700s such as the 760 or 770s You could also do what I did and spring for a GTX780Ti which I'll pay for long after the card has been replaced with a new model. :)

I'd say nothing lower than a GTX650 TI which seems to be popular on here any higher, ignore anything below x50 preferably x60 and above if you can afford it. Using A GTX680 here which should do me for a while yet.

Backups I keep 2, One on a separate drive on my main PC, and one on a separate PC backed up across my network. I use Microsofts Sync Toy which is pretty quick even on the network transfer. I also run a full backup of the complete Trainz install weekly as a duplicate install on my other gaming PC.
Yes I have too many PC's!

Having had a couple of nasty experiences with USB external drives, I tend to add internal drives and network them properly, none of this Microsoft Home group rubbish here. <g>
