Minehead to Taunton (West Somerset Railway)

Hi,

At the risk of sounding negative,

a) it's already been very well done as a payware route by Railwaves with many, many custom assets

b) I know the route very well, and don't see anything I recognise in your screenshots.

Sorry.

Hi

The way I have reproduced this route if from Google Maps and have tried to reproduce it as close as possible. The screen shots represent the section between Blue Anchor station and Dunster

I'd say that the first rule of creating a real life route on Trainz is to choose a route which you know well - there's nothing like local knowledge when it comes to even basic details. Google Maps is a good reference point (especially with Streetview in the UK now pretty much complete), but it won't help on those bits of track and scenery in between. I suggest you also need some more custom content to make the route look a lot more realistic.

Could not have said it any better. I lived in Watchet for 3 years and to be honest, I did not know what I was looking at.

Keep up the good work though, as it takes time and constant adjustments to get it right. Took me 5 years to build my part of the ECML and I could spend another 5 making it more real looking.

Just before we start picking fault lets just find out a bit about yourself first, how old are you and how long have you had trainz, reason being is that it does make a little difference on how long you have had trainz before you get used to creating routes, i think i bought my first copy of trainz back in 1999 and have progressed through the years finding better and better content each day, i'm 34 years old and have absolutely no railway knowledge at all, but when it come's to building routes i have had many a comment, granted i have never got round to putting one on the Download station, just have a trawl through through the many pieces of content on the DLS, tons of UK based houses and shops, a couple of good creators that spring to mind is domsarto, nexusdj, tmz06003, paulzmay, rumour3, chefbyte, marky7890, do a search for these usernames and you won't go far wrong, oh just one little thing what version of trainz are you running?

we all have to start somewhere and if you would like any advice then just ask away. :)

Cheers Emo

Not knowing the route

I am a classic example of somebody creating who doesn't know the route they are working on, apart from the Dawlish section which I do.

My way of working is much the same, I use GE to see what is there and try to match it. The real problem is elevation, so I use a DEM and that solves that little problem - mainly.
I also use Ordnance Survey maps for height/elevations checks, they come in really handy because at times the DEM goes astray.

Maybe my routes also bear no relation to the area produced, I don't know, I have never been there.

And as has been said, age and Trainz usage do come into the equation. It was two years before I started on the first section at Paddington, before that my routes were rubbish - maybe they still are in some people's eyes...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Hi

Thank you all for your replies.

To start with I am Kevin and am 48.

I have not been doing Trainz all that long and I am just getting the feel of how things work I am still on that long learning curve and have very little knowledge of the railway though I do have an intrest in trains.

I agree that my route might not represent the exact route but I am trying to develop further with maps etc that i can get a hold of.

My version of trainz is the 2004 but I am waitng to get delivered the 2006 version.

I will keep trying and maybe one day I might get it right

Thank you all:)

Hi Kevin. I did have a little trouble viewing some of the images but the ones I did see looks fine to me. I have never been there so I have no problem with the realism. Keep up the good work. The process will get easier and your work will keep looking better.

They're decent enough shots, but the typical standard for payware routes in Trainz is VERY high. Also, as a route that's already been done well, your market is likley to be small. In addition, MANY content creators do not automatically allow their content to be used in payware routes, so you'd have to ask EVERY creator who hasn't allowed it in the item's config file if you can use their work in their routes, which is quite a task, as many have left the community, and many will say no.

Hi

Maybe I would be better of doing something else. I have looked at other routes and I agree that the detail is an importaint aspect.

I am going to take some time out and rethink this one and make routes just for my own pleasure.

Hi Kevin,

Good thinking. If you're still intending to model a prototypical route, I'd suggest something shortish, and DEM terrain based- once the landscape is right and the maps/Google Earth images are in the game, the rest of the job becomes much easier and quicker. The time spent learning how to use Transdem or similar is very quickly regained.

Can't fault you for liking the WSR though - it's a brilliant line. There's a freeware interpretation of it on the DLS btw - search for Turks Castle.

hth,

Anthony
