Milw 261

dpfan1, I agree that it would be wonderful if No.261 could remain steaming, but unfortunately, there obviously isn't the money or interest to keep it operational for the time being. Maybe one day in the future it may steam again.

no no no you got it wrong the 261 would sit as a display in a railroad musuem like prr 1223

Are you crazy?! The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has no room for Milwaukee Road 261 and neither does any active railroad museums at the moment. They have so many engines, it may take a while for anyone to give Milwaukee Road 261 a home. I doubt the National Railroad of Museum in Green Bay even has room. Just give it a rest. Someone will solve this problem.

NEW HOPE and strasburg rails are heavy to 261 carry 261. beside the c&o 614 was at new hope also 261 should run on the new hope and ilyland

NOT...GONNA...HAPPEN!!!
Do you know how much money it costs to keep a steam locomotive operational? I mean, Southern Pacific 4449 doesn't just steam out of Portland, Oregon and steams away with ease. That costs money and if the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad was to run Milwaukee Road 261, the railroad would have to halt regular traffic and some short line railroads, don't have time to stop traffic for a steam excursion. Sometimes, this causes, "confusion and delay". I love Milwaukee Road 261 myself, but face it...it's not up for discussion right now. If nothing happens in a month, let me know. But you know absolutely nothing about how a short line works. Strasburg has more than enough steam to run and there hands are full with 475, 31 and 90 and 261 would nearly derail the Strasburg Express. :'( I love her too, but face it, no railroad is currently interested. At least, in the USA. Maybe a Canadian short line could do it, but I doubt they'd do it either.

Everybody knows the Milwaukee Road was famous for its lines operating in Pennsylvania, especially around Strasburg. That's why it would be appropriate to have 261 in RRMPA. Duh.

Dpfan1,
It not going to happen!
MR 261 never has been to Strasburg so why would it go there?
It obvious to me in Australia why isn't it obvious to you that it will NEVER run at Strasburg. Below are sevral reasons on why I think it never happen.

1. Its too heavy, The way I see it is the Strasburg railway is a tourist railway with light rails. On the other hand 261 was built for mainlines with heavy rails and IF it was to go to strasburg it would derail. I hope it won't becase it would raise the insurace costs and could possibly cause Strasburg to close their doors

2. Theres no need, 261 was built to pull heavy passenger trains NOT for pulling light trains on tourist railways.

3. It would cost to much to run, IF 261 was to run at Strasburg it would cost too much to operate it (Big engines have Big boilers which need lots of Coal and water)

4. Logistics, How would some one transport it over 800 miles over some lines that run high speed trains and manifest trains. The railroads are not going to waste possibly many Millions of dollars just so you can have your precious 261 at strasburg.

5. Why?, Why would you move a locomotive to somewhere its never been to during it revenue earing days with the MR?

Im going to stop here with my reasons on why 261 will never run at strasburg, I hope you understand why this will never happen.

Just my 2 cents.

Brokensleeper

Ps Im open to corection

uh dude strasburg tracks are heavey eoughe to carry 2-10-0 90 their tracks can hold 4-8-4 261.

Strasburg 90 weighs 96 tonnes where as 261 weighs over 400 tonnes (open to corection).
Just because the rails can hold a 96 tonne loco doesnt mean they can hold a 400 tonne loco
