maximum number of base boards?

well it's gonna be a gift to the community when i get finished, i own alot of payware trains from jointed rails, which will be used for myself, (not if but when i get done), i will post the payware locos needed for people that want to use payware and i will also upload a version with freeware locos from the download station, my goal is to have 10-20 sessions when the route is done. one big problem, we don't have enough sessions on routes these days.

How things have changed from the early 2000s when it was called "Trainz: Model Railroad Simulator" and was used to create small model railroad layouts. Now some people are contemplating layouts of a 1,000 miles and larger.

As other posters have pointed out, eventually you will run into technical and other issues, not to mention lack of time. Is one of the posters in this thread really planning to spend 10-12 hours every day for 5-7 years working on a layout?

Other than the eyestrain issue I mentioned previously, I get chided by the wife if I spend more than an hour or two on the laptop route building. There's (real) work to go to, house/garden maintenance and decorating to take care of, not to mention if the sun is shining chuck the boots on or the bikes in the back of the Sportage (which has been nicknamed "Big Blue") and go off for a nice walk/ride somewhere in the countryside.

It's called having a life...

Hello, nugget

I just want to say that you are a very brave man for undergoing such ambitious project, and I'd also like to say my best wishes and prayers go to your health. I think I will say a few things here, however I will not repeat the technical points the above users have stated, as far as the technical questions go, you seem to have your answer :).

But I will say this,... Whatever decision you make, whatever you choose to do, as far as Trainz, and especially your real life is concerned, we will respect whatever you choose to do. If you really wish to take on such a large project, by yourself, for that long a day, that frequently, I and everyone else will respect your decision.

However, like other posters in this thread have stated, who are far more intelligent than I, working on such a project, that much, that large, may not be very beneficial to your daily life, your experience with Trainz, or more importantly, your actual health.

I will say that I and the other members of the community wish what's best for you, especially your physical health. I think I will ask, only that you do what you feel is best for you, but also, I respectfully ask (not demand) that you respect your health, and keep your real life and family your top priority, as that is much more important than Trainz, and it is not worth compromising for this project.

In any case, a route project that large, even if it could be completed, it is doubtful the majority of the users here would have the machine power necessary to run it.

Once again, we respect whatever decision you will make, and we will do our best to provide all the support we can for you. We will remain with you for the whole journey, all the way, no matter what.

God bless your soul, and I wish you many healthy years to come, and a long and happy life

P.S. If I made any grammar or spelling errors, or if I sound a bit off, I do apologize, I'm using my mobile device right now and the touchscreen keyboard can be difficult to use often.

nugget,

You might want to check out this route WIP, which is a fine example of large route building:

https://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?96702-WM-amp-B-amp-O-Mega-Route&highlight=Cumberland+Mega
, if you have not already done so.

I would start by creating routes in smaller baseboard layouts, and then ensuring that I can join them seamlessly. This would allow you to break the 200-mile sections into even smaller subsections that would be more easily managed.

As far as legacy, I would assign as great a value to a well developed small layout such as philskene routinely produces, to any of the large routes out there.

The danger of large route building is that it tends to end up being long stretches of "nothingness" interspersed with oases of halfway reasonable little towns, a decent railyard now and then, but nothing all too impressive. Even some payware routes languish from this same problem. Pack all your creativity into a few baseboards at a time, and then you can have an amazing route that remains useful for a long time.

My prayers are with you at this time. Some place their faith in science, but the best medicine only delays the inevitable for us all. Unlike them, I keep a healthy view of what is beyond, and want no surprises there.

From one of your posts I was getting the impression that you are creating the landscape by had. Is that correct?
For a project this size, I would suggest to invest in TransDEM to do that for you.

i own transdem and plan on driving a section of the route in real life and gathering 100's of photos as well.

thanks for the kind words, one thing i have learned in life, the sky is the limit, when someone tells someone something is impossible, it makes people want to work that much harder, sadly my father passed away last year on dec 23rd and then my stepfather passed away 6 weeks later both from cancer. my condition is cancer in my left lung, but it was caught early enough were i have a high chance of recovery, i never smoked in my life, but somehow ended up with it. i have a 80 percent success rate, yes my health is first, this project is second. most of my close family are gone, my mom and brother are still living and i have an 8 year old that lives with his mom in indiana.yes it's a large project. just think about how good it feels to accomplish something in life,i have had that feeling many time.this goes for anyone,if you are told you can't do something, you should prove to yourself you can. i know this isn't a self esteem forum, but thats the truth. i have started putting the information into transdem, i am gonna cut the route in half then merge it when its done, trying to work on 1,000 baseboards at once would would turn into a laggy experience. down the road when pc's are faster, the route should load up fine and hopefully with future releases of trainz i won't have 100's of faulty assets, but we will see for sure.
