Massive Lag Problem

Hey folks,

Iv been playing TS2009 on my current system since it was released and with no major problems and iv downloaded every update & patch. But for no apparent reason about a week ago I began to experience extreme lag. It happens every time I play after about half an hour or so. When it does happen I have to shut it down wait for 5 mins and restart, its now become unplayable. Also I get the 'Awaiting Access to Trainz Database' screen a lot. Any advise on this problem would be fantastic.

Even though I use TRS2006, it sounds like a possible A/Vproblem (anti-virus) or a possible problem with the Trainz Asset Database - might be worth going into CMP (I think yours will be CMP 2.something) and running an extended database repair.

Failing that, what are your system specs?

Have you cleaned all the dust from the inside of the comp recently. Could be that it's overheating.

That is possible, it might also be a possible (although rare) problem involving hard drive errors (you will need to run chkdsk (you can do so by going into (my) computer, right-clicking your hard disk drive, clicking Properties, clicking Tools (the tab at the top), then click Check now.

You should get a box appear with 2 tickboxes and a Start button. Tick both boxes, click Start, then click Yes/Schedule Disk Check), then reboot the system to do the check. (NOTE: This could take 30 minutes+)

Could be worth trying a defrag of your hard drive. Its surprising how much a fragmented hard drive can effect the performance of a computer. (This wont apply to Vista as this OS defrags itself by default)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned that I think might cause something like that would be a memory leak. Does the computer start using the harddrive a lot when it starts getting laggy? Does it happen only on a specific route or does it happen on any route?

There are many things that can cause this ranging from bad content to faulty hardware.

Is your computer accessing the hard drive a lot at this point? You could be tight on space, and the system is now fighting for space at this point.

Have you tried any system diagnostics, and how is the cooling?

This could be a heat problem caused by the extra work that the computer is doing while running Trainz. The extra cpu load, and graphics card load will generate extra heat. When a cpu gets warm, it will throttle back and slow down rather than burning its self out.

A faulty memory chip can cause this to happen. If your system has bad memory, it may work fine for light use, but when put under load it will fail. The same with a bad power supply. As the system is put under more load, the components draw more current. A faulty power supply can develop voltage drops, which can lead to all kinds of weird behaviour.

Faulty content can cause problems like this. Does this only happen in a particular area of your route?

These are a some of the things I can think of off my head.

My suggestion would be undo the case and carefully brush / blow / vacuum it out including the power supply.

Verify you have more than 20% free space on the hard drive.

Run a chdisk followed by a defrag.

If the above doesn't clear it then go onto JCitron's suggestions.

Trainz runs the cpu at 100% and many computers are not designed to cool the cpu running at 100% for so long.

This isn't true for all computers, I know on my system peak CPU usage I've seen is 40%. I'm using a somewhat old Core2Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3.0Ghz. (And Trainz does use all four cores, but uses #4 a lot more then the rest.) Now a single core system, it'll probably peg the CPU to the max.

TRS2004/06/TC3 can only use one cpu so on a dual core it will show at 50%. On a cpu with hyperthreading it will show at 50%, however this is one cpu at 100%, on a quad it will show at 25%.

TS2009/10 will spread itself out more, because its real time it will use one cpu at roughly 100% then spread other threads onto other cores.

For comparison most office machines run about 2-5% cpu activity thus their cooling requirements are much lower and most computers are designed to cool the average heat requirement not the extra demands that Trainz puts on the system. Over heating is a common problem on computers running Trainz.

John;

I find that frequent cleanup of Internet and other temp files is a big help in avoiding slugish operation. The Trainz programs like to be connected to the Internet when they run and the temp file may be space limited.

Also while running the Driver mode there is continuous swapping of vitual (on disk) memory or temp files.

I have a habit of running the Internet and other cleanup tools daily. Try it:) Irving.

Hey, id like to say thank you for advise. I followed it to the letter and added an extended database repair and TS2009 is working better than ever before, although was a long time getting there, my PC took 10hrs to defrag.

Youifhonk

P.S thank you to all other for there advise
