Lost saved work playing via steam

Ok, so i'm at my wits end. I loaded up Trainz 22 Platinum today via Steam and instead of loading straight up, it said it had to download it again. After a long wait, it loaded. To my shock and total despair, the game and many others I've been building and the main one I've been working on for months, maybe nearly a year, has gone. I've noticed the build number has changed and the Trainz start up screen is different. I backed up the game by saving it as different file names but within Steam so these have also now gone. It's always been enough until now.

I just don't understand why, after a build update the maps i have built and saved have all disappeared. Does anyone know if i can get them back? Is there a process or a location they can be found? Why does this happen? I found them in 'Sessions' in the Trainz game menu but they won't load or do anything and have a missing dependencies icon shown on them... why....?!!

I've probably not explained myself brilliantly, that's the shock and sadness for you! But please don't hesitate to ask if you have questions regarding this issue. Any feedback would be so gratefully received. I just don't want to lose it all, its my best work to date.

They are not lost, the update created a new installation with a new data folder. Your old data folder is still installed. Look for the build folder shown in your launch screen settings/install. You should also see your old folder somewhere in this location or the parent folder one back if you left it at default. Change the path to the old build folder and do a DBR.

That's interesting. Steam just told me there was an update. Clicked the Update and it installed. Don't forget to update all your DLC! Steam won't do that automatically.

Did you move your game location? If so, did you move it using the Steam function?

Another thing is to verify file integrity before doing the update. If the file integrity check fails Steam will download the game all over again.

Oh wow, i probably shouldn't get excited until it works, but thank god there's a chance. I don't suppose it would be possible for you to give me a bit more guidance on moving the build folder and what to do, i'm not brilliant when it comes to this bit, not first time anyways. I've only been able to see one build in the directory with no sign of another, which i assume is the new one? I've found some files in backups directory too of that game, but not moving them back over too successfully either... nothing is ever simple, is it? Why do they do this for, what a backwards step...!!

No, i didn't move nothing. If i knew my whole months work would be lost and this would happen, i'd settle for the old version easily, it's pretty damn good already! I wouldn't know how to check the file integrity at all to be honest... :(

You don't need to move anything just go to the launcher and select settings - install tab, and point it to your previous data folder (eg. mine points to T:\TRS22DATA)

To check game file integrity in Steam go to your library and select a game. Don't open the game. Over on the right hand side there's a little cog icon that, when you mouseover, pops up with 'Manage'. Click that and go down to properties. In the window that opens select 'Installed Files' The last item on that tab should have a button that says 'Verify integrity of game files'. It'll replace any corrupted files.

I wouldn't do it for Trainz now as the update went okay. Apart from losing access to your work of course....

Where is the directory with all the purchased and your assets (Not a basic game downloaded via Steam) and how to restore it:

I used another option to fix everything that is possible at once.
Close the game. In the default directory if it has not been changed: %LOCALAPPDATA%\N3V Games\trs22
Leave folders only (do not delete):
packages - Purchased content
original - Downloaded from the DLS
local - Installed from other sources
backups - Backups, if you need it
Delete all other files and folders. After that make a DBR (or it will start automatically after launching the launcher.) and next you will need to log in to your account in the launcher and make the settings again.

Annoyingly, i just cant find my previous data folder, i never changed it from the first install. Is it likely that this update has put it in a completely different place to this new one? I would've thought not, but these don't always do the simple, common sense solution i guess. I've tried searching for more NV3 folders and such like and nothings come up yet. In the current folder only seems to have one build folder and I guess that's the updated one? I've found the back up files to these games but i can't find any path history around it. I've tried moving it, at least what I think is moving it, but it hasn't worked, don't know if it's me though or it not working... I've done exactly what you've said and not been confused or came up with other options along the way, so I think i can say it's not me this time... Grrrrr

When you in the settings from the start up menu and choose which folder to use, this is what's selected C:\Users\gavin\AppData\Local\N3V Games\trs22\build s9nugouq1
I assume this is the new one but when i look in there, there aren't any other folders.

If you don't know where this old folder is located, copy the folder names one by one into the Windows Explorer search:

packages, original, local, backups

This way you can find your old folder, if it still exists.

THANKYOU SO MUCH olman777! And thanks everyone, I've had some success and recovered the last game and map. It wasn't easy for me, but you got me there. When you're annoyed and upset you have such a shorter concentration span and seem to miss the obvious, maybe you guys are a bit like that too or know the feeling? So thank you so much. Can it take this opportunity to ask, going forward, what back up measures do I need to take to stop this happening again? I've only ever had an issue where making multiple saves has always been enough of a backup, but I guess in a few months time when there is another update, I'm going to lose it all again? Once again, thanks for all your input, and these back up tips too! :)

Damn, what a coincidence. The same thing just happened to me. I was editing a signal and Trainz CTD so I did a DBR and it said it 'put aside' my new route and session. Tried backups but the backup was so old it was pointless.

As far as protecting your work, making sure you've got backups set up in settings, and/or exporting as a .cdp I think should do it.

If you see the new build folder, you need to go back/up one to the parent folder. You should see other Trainz folders one has your old build folder. Most updates only change your existing install, but sometimes this includes retail release versions which may install a new one. Don't worry as your data folders do not get deleted or replaced on any new install.

Your new build is at C:\Users\gavin\AppData\Local\N3V Games\trs22\build s9nugouq1
If you go to C:\Users\gavin\AppData\Local\N3V Games you should see other TRS installs, inside one of them is your old build folder.
