Lagging

Hi!

Does anyone know how to prevent lagging from happening in my trainz game? I like my trainz smooth...this for both TRS2006 and the Three versions of TC I'm getting soon. Anyone know what's up with all the laggign and how I get it to stop?

Ok,

First question - what are your computer specification details (processor make & rating, RAM, graphics card, sound card) - and operating system?

What's the results of the suitability check?

which route are you using?

If your computer is close to the Minimum specification (see the package) then you will need to reduce the detail (use the sliders), and use the routes with less detail.

In general, make sure that your computer is running only Trainz (use task manager), the hard disk has been defragmented and that there is about 25% (min) free disc space.

Well I'm on vacation right now so I can't answer all but I use any route and lagging happens. For no reason...

I'd lay odds that your computer is too slow for the program.

That's a maybe - though it's quite possible to improve the settings to reduce it - as an example, I've set "resource memory" to 256 (Mb).

That makes a huge difference to the smoothness of the display - but you need to have spare memory for this - hence the questions....

Cheers,

Having just a slow cpu would only give you a low frame rate if all else was OK.
The fastest computer can still have major jerk, lag, hesitation. Lack of adequate available system RAM will cause such problems. One gig with XP and 2 gig with Vista should do in most cases, however if the RAM is being used by other aplications, there may not be enough left for Trainz.

It could be some of the content you have downloaded for the route you are running, or maybe it came with the download. Sites that don't check errors before uploading can have that, but on the other hand there is some great content on third party sites. CMP will alert you to errors if you want to fix them.

Is there any error content included with the built-in routes? Lagging happens there, too. :o

There shouldn't be. If that's the case and running no third party content, then it could be as mentioned above a hardware issue.

There is no route that lags more than Northbay county. It takes ages to load, ages to find all the content and put it in the right place! And that's just getting the route ready. How come?

Mostly because disk drives these days are so slow. :( There's a lot of data being read in from the disk when loading a complex route or when encountering a scene for the first time that uses a lot of models. While disk capacities have increased a lot in the past few years, disk speeds are increasing painfully slowly. I want faster hard-drives! :p

Sounds right

Video card is too slow for trainz. Sorry!

Yes, that sounds about right if the case is that built-in routes are slow, they normally run okay. You may be able just to upgrade the card without buying a new machine so ask about that first. A card with its own RAM is practically essential. Depending on how much RAM your PC has, that could also be possibly increased.
You could go to Trainz Preferences and reduce Detail level, both Draw Distances and put in FULL Daytime Fog, that will help a lot.
I have a high end PC and it is the case that the more content put into a route the greater the effect of frame rate and even my PC will jerk sometimes because I overdo the scenery. To make and run highly detailed and realistic looking routes requires an extremely good machine. How well of are you? Ha ha..
Another option you could go for is to shut all possible background programs down before starting Trainz by using a utility like EndItAll. With everything except vital progs going you will find a big difference.
To see frame rates you need the program called FRAPS and once installed and after using EndItAll go into Explore and start FRAPS up. Set it to show on screen and just diminish it to the lower Control Bar (do not shut it down) so that when Trainz is running the FR counter will be displayed and that will show you without any doubt how well your PC is handling the graphics. You need at least a rate of 12, more if possible.
But to cheer you up a bit I think that practically everybody suffers from a jerk on the screen now and then, it's a thing we all have to learn to live with.

For an immediate boost, make sure that trainz is using about 3/4 of your RAM. To do this, enter the following line into trainzoptions.txt, and replace the * with a value equal to 3/4 of your RAM:
-ResourceMemory=****

Hope This Helps,
