KUID Index Closing?

Today, on the KUID index, I noticed this particular message:

"

The site will close on 15 December 2025.
Subscriptions will no longer be possible after 15 December 2024.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the site over the years."

As I've not seen any announcement on this, I do need to ask: why are they closing?

I just saw that announcement too. I agree with Rico, it would be nice if someone purchases the site before it disappears because it is an excellent source of not only missing assets, but also of virtually unknown third-party websites with some really great content.

Sad to see that the site closes. It was very useful in order to rebuild my route after buying TRS22. I hope not to get as mad as when I uninstalled completely T:ANE, wiping off the content I had, because I won't get as lucky as I was.

Haven't visited TKI in ages. I used to use it until they chose to implement a paywall, after that I simply just looked around for free alternatives. Maybe the paywall killed the site? Paywalling stuff is kind of a double edged sword in some ways, some people are willing to pay for the convenience of it, others will not bother and seek a freely-available alternative instead.

The sad thing is that there isn't any alternative to TKI right now.

In all due fairness, I don't see what other choice they had: things were tough, they needed something to keep the site going

I agree there. What makes it all puzzling is why we're only hearing about this now
He posted this yesterday evening around 4:30 pm EST (21:30 GMT) or so on TKI. I had been there earlier and the message wasn't there. When I searched for something else later on around that time I had to log in again and the message was there.

I mean unless you count that Russian site? (If you know, you know.)
Trainzland doesn't cover anywhere near the volume of available Trainz content that TrainzKuidIndex does.

A useful site for hard to find RU and East Europe content, for sure, but all else it's pretty hit and miss. That's the only time I use it, and maybe occasionally for old U.S. NG content from defunct hosting sites.

TKI has always been useful, even of you don't have a subscription. You could always post an ask on our dedicated kuid search thread,
and ask someone to search TKI for you, and post links.

Maintaining the website and keeping it updated would be no small task, - especially if the site owner has a day job or the demands of family responsibilities.
On the other hand they might be like many of us and getting on a bit in years with perhaps some health issues to deal with. What started out as a good idea might be now a fatiguing and thankless chore, - and with spending money getting tight for most ordinary folk and subscriptions slipping away they might be heartily fedup with it all.

Not to mention that there was some payware content there.

That's a real shame. What a helpful asset! I would like to think that it would still be available as possible freeware so at least past content wouldn't become vaperware

Maybe someone could save the links of the websites from Kuid Index that are still hosting trainz contents and publish them .
