Just what I needed to end the year!

And the story to go with it.

Was up at the Colorado Railroad Museum for the day, no one was there though, so I swept the floors. No big deal

When I left, I went to pick my grandmother up from my Great Aunt, and by the time we left it was rush hour. No big deal, rush hour traffic is normal.

Well one fateful person ruined the day. Not sure what he was doing, but all of a sudden he slammed on his brakes. I had no time to react, but I hit mine and rear ended him. At which point I was yelling and screaming. I just 2 weeks ago finished rebuilding the front suspension after hitting a curb in a bad snow storm. That cost me $800. By the time I look up to see if the person I hit was ok, he hit the gas and took off.

Well then the worst of it came, not a second after I look up, the guy behind me comes flying into me (he claims he stopped). Then he stops, the guy behind him hits him. So by the time the dust had all settled, we had 4 cars piled up on the highway, with the 5th guy running off (the one I hit)

Well of course I got a ticket for "following too close" but the worst news is that my car is totaled. The Unibody failed, exactly as BMW designed it to do. The rear of the car is twisted to the right, with the rear right of the car buckling above the wheel. The right rear door won't close or seal anymore, the window won't roll down, the interior lights won't turn off. Trunk still opens though. The Aluminum bumper survived, which I thought was pretty amazing, even though its now crooked.

The hood only latches on one side. According to the E28 collectors, this sort of damage will cost in excess of $6,000. The car is only worth about $1500.

So Happy New Year everyone, My year ended with one disaster after the next, hope that everyone else has better luck then I do.

...And since I go to the CRRM too, I will promptly Reply as a Courtesy:

SUCH BLASPHEMY!

And to think that Car Companies pretty Much design their Automobiles to Fail.:n:

At least Locomotive builders had the Right Idea to make their Engines Last... :o

It was designed to fail so that the passengers didn't. Basically a modern day crumple zone. Car is 24 years old, and still very safe. Still does not change the fact that I now have 3,000 pounds worth of parts

Hi Klinger,

Sorry to hear about your troubles in the last days of 2009 - glad your OK though, as often accidents to harm our bodies to, not only our metallic outer shells that we travel around in most of the time I feel.
I'm glad cars today are designed to fail on accidents so we don't fail in our bodies, but it ain't that fun having a good car wrecked beyond easy repair, or fully wrecked.
Because, it always will cost something called money... :-(
And, most of us need those metallic shells to get around in the world - knowing that makes me feel with you, but still happy your OK (at least I assume you are based on the post I've just read. :))

I can't offer anything but my sympathy, and hopes that 2010 will be a good year for all of us and of course that some good will come out if it early for you as this is not a good way to end a year and I think you need a nice break somehow.

By best wishes to you, and to all of you others out there too. :)

Linda

Just an observation. Neither I nor anyone I know or heard of regrets that 2009 is ending. Was this some sort of an epidemic or what?

I'm just looking forward to a new start in a couple days.

Best wishes to all.

Bernie

Oh man, that sucks. At least you're ok, right? I hope 2010 is a great year for you, and I sure hope no more car accidents.

James

Sorry to hear of the tragic ending of your BMW. But, very glad you are ok. Take care, and hope that 2010 brings better beginnings.

Regards,
Todd

Please you think you did bad:

1996 Mercury Cougar XR7 that came from NJ with not a speck of rust on it. Crashed 12/16/2009.

Slid off the road and ran into an embankment after flying over a gully. The car is totaled. I got away with a bloody nose and numb lip with the airbag going off. I am lucky.

Happy New Years everyone, now I have to go to the dentist tomorrow to get 5 cavity's filled, what fun due to the fact I am afraid of doctors of any kind.

Cheers,
Adam

NOTE: I'm not saying the original poster is wrong, but we are only seeing one side of what happened, but I will reply as if it is.

Perhaps he shouldn't have slammed on his brakes, but I don't believe it was him that ruined your day.

I had no time to react, but I hit mine and rear ended him. At which point I was yelling and screaming.
So what was the reason you were too close?

I just 2 weeks ago finished rebuilding the front suspension after hitting a curb in a bad snow storm. That cost me $800. By the time I look up to see if the person I hit was ok, he hit the gas and took off.
That's irrelevant to what happened.

Well of course I got a ticket for "following too close"
Would you like me to answer that?
