Just order Trainz 2012 (I hope)

Phew, what a time. I'm not great with computers. I Finally found a reply and my password, etc. in my spam folder, when I was about to clean it out. I'm hoping there will be no problem with my debit/visa card.

I'm hoping that by buying the boxed disc I will not have to bother with Steam. I want to use Trainz on an off line computer. I have learned quite a bit about using computers with a sim named CFS2. It's a WW11 flight sim. I can do most of the basic stuff, mess about with the files, install downloads, easy stuff. I cannot make my own stuff, just use what others have created. As far as downloading items goes, I download items on this pc, transfer them to an usb device, and copy them to my off line pc. I hope that will be the same for this sim.

I am hoping that I will be able to use Slugsmasher's logging "add ons". I quess ya have to pay to get downloads, that's ok with me.

Is there anything else I need? In the flight sim I use a joystick, pedals, etc.

I'm sure I'll have many newbie questions. This will be a lot cheaper than building a model railroad. At 61 years old, I may not live long enough to complete it!

I was 48 when I crawled out from under my model railroad benchwork and discovered virtual trains, never went back. Lot faster to create routes, never blow fuses wiring reverse loops, never burn your fingers soldering switch machines, and never have to dig wet plaster out of your ears after making a tunnel. Repainting locos and cars is easier too, you don't fill the house with paint fumes or accidentally paint your dog Pullman green.

As for running on an offline PC, it's possible, but simpler to run on a connected PC. Primary tool for downloading or importing is a utility called Content Manager, so to run on an offline PC you would need to keep one copy of Trainz installed on the connected PC, download the stuff you want, save it all to CDP files, transfer to the other computer, then import all the CDP files into the offline copy. And by the way, there is a bunch of payware stuff you can buy, but there's also a lot of free stuff you can just download.

As for what else, I too have joystick/throttle for flightsims, for train simulators I bought this;

I've had two of them, one for me and one for my youngest kid (who's a much more fanatic train nut than I am) since 2003 and they're well worth the money.

You may have to go online anyway to update the Trainz version you get.
 
Wow, thanks for the info. Oh, man, I gotta get one of those raildriver rigs! I may have to connect my off line rig to the internet. I have not tried that for awhile, but I remember it was quite a headache. Oh well, knowing myself, I will have plenty of those before I get up and running. Geez, I got at least 3 weeks before it arrives, I should get the other rig online by then! Thanks again, guys, I gotta go and do my work out, before I talk myself out of it. I should have done it 4 hours ago. Later on, I will have a good look at the forum. Cheers.

Pretty sure the post is already in Australia, altho from what I understand the forum server is in Houston. Or are you talking about the Raildriver? Pretty sure they ship those anywhere in the world, just don't order something like fedex overnight because they weigh 5 1/2 pounds.

Rail-driver adds a while new dimension to a RR sim. Use mine everytime I run Trainz, plus I use it on World of Subways 3.

Living in a country that it difficult to get ANY model railroad supplies then add living in a very rural part of the country it makes building a model railroad almost impossible. After trying virtual railroading there is no going back as you can achieve the ultimate dream of model railroaders and ride in the cab or passenger cars on your route. You're in for a real treat once you get over the learning curve :confused:. You're lucky as this forum is very helpful with questions from newbies, they put up with me :hehe:.

All I can say is welcome to the hobby as it is so much more than just a game!

I think Trainz is more of a LIFESTYLE than a hobby for many! :p

I run Trainz offline too. There are many and varied strategies to run the sim offline while still being able to take advantage of the online features such as downloading off the download station, etc. Probably the simplest and cheapest is to online go only as-needed then off, using the IPCONFIG command. I've taken things a bit further by having a mostly Trainz-only installation of XP-64 in a separate partition - on a separate drive, actually - and just booting to the internet-enabled partition when I want to download something. Since Trainz has no DRM, it's not an issue to run the same program in two or more Windows installations. I get some pretty mean performance this way since the Trainz installation is completely unencumbered by anti-virus, a firewall, or even the meager clutter introduced by having lots of registry junk. BTW, you can download patches and install them offline if you want.

Don't like this mountain pass, it's too short. Need to expand, but I already traded in my top loading washer for a front loader so I could build benchwork and lay track over the laundry area, running out of room in the basement! :'( Rent a jackhammer, knock a hole in the foundation and dig a tunnel out to the garage? :cool:

Last HO layout I had took up most of a 24x35 foot basement, and still got only 2 1/2 scale miles of mainline. I figured it out once for Chicago Metro, the overall size is about 15 miles by 10 miles, in HO scale that wouldn't fit inside the old zeppelin hangar at NAS Lakehurst.

With Trainz, when you run out of room to expand;

Well, seems like I'm online with this pc, hope it stays that way! I think this machine should run Trainz ok, flight sims are hard on fps, and it handled that very well. I put all my flight sim stuff away. You seem to get to the point where flying is something you only do to test out new missions, scenery, etc. So, this machine will be for Trainz only. I decided to put this machine on line because I have the feeling life will be a whole lot easier that way. Thanks for all the info, fellas. Geez, waiting for it to show up will be the hard part. I'm going to check the mail box right now, hee, hee.
 
Well I'm a former commercial pilot...but, yeah, I fire up a flight sim maybe once a month. Trainz all the way, baby! :)
 
Boy, you guys make it seem like a dream come true! I guess while I'm waiting for it to arrive, I better do a few extra chores around the house. I want the wife to be in a good mood when that Rail-driver shows up on my desk. I found a Canadian dealer out west. I may order it today. Some companies are not set up for the debit/visa cards, so I may have to send a money order. I hate and don't own credit cards. Sometimes, if it's the only way, I have to ask the wife to let me use her's. Dang, I hope it doesn't come to that! Meanwhile, when I get the time, I will search for the history of the C.N.R. in Nova Scotia. Boy, it was great around here when we were kids. We could get into the cabooses and plows, there was even a "hand-car" that we could move about 1/4 mile on a siding. I guess boys just love trains and that feeling never really goes away.
 
Flight sims got me back into rails (Trainz) again.... Flight Sims are boring, no matter how much you love aviation, you're bound to nothing which seems to be freedom but all that freedom ultimately leads to starvation. And now I'm back at the ol' Trainz again. Feels like the basement. Love it.

I think there is alot more to do in Trainz than in a flight sim.
 
Good day, Gents; Well, Trainz has been shipped and I'm sending off a money order tomorrow for the Rail driver. While I'm waiting for them to show up, I was wondering if there are tutorials in the DLS. Can I get into the DLS using my password? I believe there is a serial number that comes with the boxed cd (cds?) that you can get into the DLS with. Is it still better to buy a first class ticket? Geez, I think there is a whole new language I have to learn. I never heard of a kuid before. CDP files were something I could, and sometimes should get rid of. In CFS2 the game would make a new cdp file the next time you used the item. (aircraft, building, etc). I'm hoping maybe there are some tutorials for newbies. Man, I've been looking at some of the screenshots here, and watching videos. I can hardly wait for it to show up in the mailbox!

I have just been at this a couple of months and am learning all the time. Once you get it installed, do the tutorials which are part of the program, That will get you started.
