JR Trip to the "West Slope"- Picture thread

Looks like a police lineup. Is the person behind the camera IDing the suspect?:hehe: I spotted Justin and Mike but that was it.

"Yes officer, it was the guy second from the left, he wanted to show the girls his rabbit's nose........"

Ironicly the Tunnel Inn building was at one time, long ago, the Galitzin town jail building, and the present proprietor used to get jumping up and down mad as all get out when people used his parking lot for taking photos, and would come out screaming mad when railfans crossed over his parking lot guard rail to take photos of trains.

Well, the dude's a pretty nice and friendly guy from what the wife and I encountered. He gave us a tour, hung out with us and JR, etc. (I was not with JR, it was just worked out we were there when they were.) The Inn was cool. And the place is so nice that my wife has said she wants to go back in the fall (for the fall foliage) and even if that doesn't work out, if it was winter-ish. Meaning, she's willing to wear three layers of clothing just to watch some trains. Guess the place can't be too bad, eh? :)

Possibly the Tunnel Inn owner has changed since I was there ... IDK ... but it was great there ... as well as the Cresson Inn which was once a RR Layover Flop House ... The Cassandra Motel is also quaint ... and many RR hotels B&B are in the area, as well as in Marysville (Enola) Bridgeview Inn

I would too...its private property and his parking there is limited as it is for his guests. His property is for the enjoyment of his guests so rightfully so I'd ask people nicely to move out..... Mike's a great guy and a railfan too, but obviously is going to take care of his guests first, other fans and such after. Station Inn obviously doesnt have the parking issues of Gallitzin so he doesnt have to worry about that front.

I've stayed at all 3 of the local establishments and I do think the Tunnel Inn and the Station Inn are pretty well equal. Station Inn gets all the traffic but no A/C, whereas Tunnel Inn loses the "slide" traffic, but has A/C. I think at least in the summer months they equal each other out. Both owners of these inns are great people and I would highly recommend them both to anyone wanting a good stay on the West Slope.

Cassandra Overlook Motel I will pass on. Just as expensive as the other two, but no view, the rooms are meh at best and I just generally did not care for the place nor did the rest of my group. Several fire hazards among other things in the rooms.....we will never go back there.

We stay at Cassandra, the rooms are clean and cheap and ya that's about it. Our favorite spot on the Mountain is Cassandra so if we stay there we have a bathroom close by. just my 0.02 cents

There was a fictional "state law" at one of the restaurants we visited that said being under 21, I could not sit at the same table as someone who was consuming alcohol.

i should of made you stand a foot away from the table and then chug my beer as fast as i could. then after it was depleted, you could sit down.

Here is a picture by RRSignal, its a picture of me taking a picture of him taking a picture of me.

Warning - leads to some big pix!

The Gallitzin Tunnels

The GP9 in the Horseshoe Curve National Park. K4 1361 used to sit here.

A Schnabel car at the Railroader's Memorial Museum in Altoona. My wife was really looking forward to seeing interesting and unusual stuff being carried and even picked up a lot of terminology from the JR crew and I. And, as we all know, Schnabels carry some of the most unusual stuff to ride the rails! We even got to see a transformer being carried on one out the Gallitzin Tunnel, though the pic didn't come out.

Model board of "SO" tower, South Fork, PA. A PRR-era interlocking diagram is available here. The museum also had the interlocking machine itself in the basement, of course, not attached to the model board. I'm hoping they might put up an interlocking simulation someday like they have in Harrisburg. That's about the only thing this museum is missing.

After going back to The Curve from the museum, we caught some NS action:

And then on to Cassandra:

Cassandra was pretty wild to have freights, one after the other, hauling butt at 50 MPH a couple feet below you.
