WHOOOOOA

I live in the city BNSF's Boeing trains originate from. It's always cool to see them in person, can't wait to have them in Trainz! Good stuff!

I have to wonder, do you put so much effort into the detail just because you can? I don't feel like Trainz is keeping up in terms of being able to really show off the amount of detail.

I kind of beg to differ, there is a lot more details from content created for Trainz than you think, as I am interpreting what you are saying.

I mean the actual game its self. Like if a train goes by in the game, I won't be able to tell if those bolts are 3d or not.
Okay, the more recent versions newer than T:ANE, I would say don't have this kind of concern as I am not a rivet counter.

The next version of Trainz ought to have 4k (4096x4096) texture support so that detail can be increased. It's sad that Trainz doesn't have 4k support yet games like War Thunder allow texture files in excess of 8192x8192 pixels.

Some of the items above are depicting the high detail meshes that are used to create the effects on the final in game models. Here is an example:

These model details get "baked" into the texture maps for the lower poly game models. Where I have several thousand polys here the details are rendered into the ambient occlusion and normal maps and other maps used for effects on the textures. This is by far the best way to get accurate details on the textures, and saves heaps of hand drawing details that you can never get right.

The above mesh image was from NS 4851, but this is a similar area on another model:
