Is it recommended to keep the .cdp files?

I'm downloading many .cdp files from different web sites and after installing them is it a good idea to keep the .cdp files? Or is it just a waste of precious hard disk space?

Thanks!

Yes...in a way...

 I open the .cdp files with the program & edit the content...if you do that the .cdp file just re-installs the original file...

If you wish to keep them, save them to a removable media.

Payware items should be saved like that, however updates to the payware items obsoletes the original.

Keeping the .cdp file is like holding a .zip file...that's what a .cdp is...

Thanks backyard. I thought also to store them on a removable media. But let's say in the future some asset disappears and it shows as unknown in CMP. You know you have stored it somewhere between those thousands of .CDP files, but how do you know which one it is.

Isn't there a way to explore a folder full with .cdp files where the software shows you all the KUID's contained in each pack? I know you can do it with CMP but it needs to install everything before you can see anything and that can take a long time.

Trainz Pro Routes used to offer an excellent freeware utility called CDP Browser 2. Last time I looked it was in their forums somewhere. Try a search.

It may help to create a tree of folders with meaningful names to store the CDP files. With some exceptions they're not usually all that big relative to modern hard disk sizes so you can keep them on a separate area of a hard disk or on a USB memory key drive (for example, in a folder called TRS2006 Extras) and back them up onto DVD's regularly.

That's great info John, thanks for that. I was hoping that nothing like that existed. That would give me a new programming project. Also one of my hobby's.

A well, CDP Browser works really well and on the bright side I don't need to create something myself and can focus my time on Trainz itself. :p

Hello diabloNL, I've saved nearly all my 3rd party assets and put them into special folders I created in My Documents area on my PC. Just create separate folders for each country, then divide the assets up for locomotives, rolling stock, scenery items, etc, etc. Then I burn them all onto one CD, so I have everything together for that country....Sometimes you would need to have 2 or 3 discs for each country as there is so much available....Whenever I download a .cdp file, I always add some extra narrative on it to tell me what it is or you can do it afterwards by right clicking on the asset and go to rename - then as well as the kuid number type in the description of the item - so you finish up with something like kuid:xxxxx:xxxxx Polish loco PKP ST44 # 2766 - or something like that. You only need to do it once, then you have it saved FOREVER....

I save the CDPs too, and this has help me in the past when I had to reinstall stuff on my hard drive.

I like your method, Ex. I may adopt that myself.

Thanks ex-railwayman, that is indeed a good tip! I also like to keep some kind of structure in it so it's easier to find things when needed.

I really don't save anything but payware...

 I do segregate by company that offers the content.

This is why the Download Station is handy...It will be there if I need it...
