iPad

Why is everybody arguing over Macs when the title says 'iPad'?

Anyway.
Instead of Trainz on an iPad (or iPod Touch for that matter) which would be a complete mess, someone should do an app to control our trains with.
If anyone hasn't noticed, it's rather clumsy driving in Cab Move, having to move the camera around, fiddle with the controls etc. The next closest thing is the Cab Controls HUD, which still feels clunky and primitive if anything.

Nice, big, clean interface with controls for all of a locomotives essential functions.
Call it 'iEngineer'. :)

I'd gladly pay US$10 for that, compared to an arm and a leg for Raildriver and/or TrackIR, shipping not included.

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

edit-
I apologize for my mistake. Trainz will run fine on a Mac computer. It will be a mess on the iPhone OS.

TS 2010 + Bootcamp runs very nicely on my iMac.

Still classic post as you ask why everyone is arguing over Macs when the title says iPad and then in the next line include iMacs and Mac Pros. :)

Already written a bunch of it but I am sadly lacking time to do things like fancy graphics for the controls.

To run Trainz on the iPad, you would need a keyboard, a strong hard drive and so on. Trainz can't run on something like that, because it isn't strong like a computer can and also, a computer or a laptop has the capabilities to run Trainz. That sounds like playing a game of bowling with a golf ball.

The iPad does have a hard drive, 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB solid state drive. Capacity is only going to increase while costs go down. Chances are by the time Auran would have something out of the oven for the iPad the high end would be 128GB.

The iPad also has a strong processor. Otherwise, Laminar Research wouldn't have X-Plane running on it.

I can't think of any reason why you would need a keyboard to run Trainz on the iPad. Touchscreen computers are extremely immersive, and games seems to be one of the most ideal places to take advantage of that.

Edited to add this: For reference before you say the iPad isn't powerful enough to do this sort of thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nk14sC49BaI ;-)

But all that said, as this matures over the next couple of years, the web itself will begin to be the home of 3d games. http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2010/04/html5-and-webgl-bring-quake-to-the-browser.ars For Trainz and everything else. No operating system preference required.

No, No, No...You Kant play Trainz on inferior equipment

You kant play a cassette tape in a CD player, and you kant play a DVD movie on a CD player, and you kant play a Blue Ray DVD movie on a E-Box, and you kant play Trainz on a Sony Playstation...so why on earth would anyone be able to play Trainz on an I-Pad ? If you bought a MAC, you avoided buying a true Personal Computer. Why people would purposely sidestep buying a PC, and instead opt to buy a MAC, I don't have a clue ! I hear that you kant play video games on any Apple: carp. And if you bought a DELL, you paid too much money for a 1gb 160gb HD, with a super cool PC skin.

All I use are Macs. Haven't had a Windows box in years.

Through boot camp Macs run Windows very nice. The majority of what I do on a computer I can do with Mac. Trainz and MSTS are diversions, but I still can boot into Windows and enjoy them. They are the only Windows programs I have at the moment, not including RS.

As to which is better, that is a personal choice. I use what fits my needs. The Ipad looks "neat", but really don't see a use for it. A small laptop would be a much better buy. Maybe in the near future if they continue to expand it but now it looks like nothing but a gadget for technophiles.

Congradulations? Just because you have steam doesn't mean you get the games. You will probably not get much other than the valve games. Have fun playing Half Life 2, I have been playing it for 4 years now. :hehe:

Steam for Mac is available.

I find it amusing that 'Steam for the Mac' is the current saviour of gaming on macs, while for the last 7 years all I've heard from mac users is how 'Steam is evil DRM' (really? iTunes isn't?), and 'Steam is unreliable and buggy, why would we want it?'

PS, "Comic Sans" is considered an internet menace, please don't use it in your posts, it just makes you look silly.

Hi Everybody.
What I don't understand in this argument is why anybody would wish to buy a Mac and then have to use "boot camp" (whatever that is) to be able to use Windows . Why not just buy a bog standard PC with Windows already installed which enables the user to use any software program they wish.

With the greatest respect to all Mac users who always seem to have obvious dedication and views with regard to their machines, but ownership seems to be a form of elitism without any advantage as far as I can perceive. If there are any advantages would someone please enlighten me, then perhaps I will change my views .

Again with the greatest respects to everyone's views in the thread

Since this has gone kind of off topic I'll add my 2 cents..... I have used linux, OSX and windows... I Am now on Windows 7 - and must say am very happy with it.... I still use itunes within windows (I like itunes) I have an iphone so I like to mix things up ...

With that said to each his or her own....... I don't think one is any better then the other I think they all do different things for different people...... There is no right or wrong.

Each system is sot of "aimed" at doing varrious things. Linux is generally used for 'hard core' computing; things like programing, coding, etc. Mac is generally used for 'artsy' stuff; things like image editing, movie editing, music mixing, etc. Windows is more of your general use/buissness use; things like Word Proccessing (& Excel, ppt, access, etc), as well as basic web surfing, and gaming. However thats the general uses you can use various systems for other things...
