Installing Trainz to a new computer – Folder Issues

I have ordered a new computer with two hard drives with the intention of installing Trainz on the second drive and virtually anything else on the first drive.
Looking through the forum this seems to be the best method as I have read that some members have partitioned their drives to install Trainz in a separate partition.
There are a couple of issues that I am not quite sure about. Do I install TR2010, TRS2006 and TC3 first, do any patching (patches for TS2010 & SnC) then install my add ons – SnC, Murchison 2, Duchess, Blue Comet & Coronation Scot and then finally add all of the extra content to SnC. After this do I then copy the local folders from my old PC or should I over-write the new versions of the ENTIRE TS2010, TRS2006 & TC3 directories with the old versions or do I merely copy over the local folders.
I am presuming that the purpose of the fresh install is for Registry purposes, if however I copy the Entire directories do I need to install the patches and the add on packs or do they also have registry entries, whether it be in Windows or Trainz.

Whoo. Ken. That,s an interesting one. There are some clever computer people on this forum who will help you quickly. I only replied because I wonder, have you considered a external drive for your copying and backups? Mayby?

I keep all of my back ups to an external 500Gb hard drive, I copy all of the local folders every two weeks.
I would use this to copy the entire folders and then copy them to the new PC.

On your new computer install each version as if it was the first time. Then do your update patches for the version. This speeds up the update as it does not have to go through all the downloaded assets. Next load your add ons and once all is installed I would do a check to see if each is running before I copied the local folder back. Copy the local folder back and then delete the .tdx and .bku files to let your version rebuild the data base.

If you search for Solway's plain backup this programme will back up all your files to your selected location. But when you backup at a later time it will compare the files and only copy newer files so saving time, use it all the time for all my backups.

Just put the old hard drive in the new machine and copy it all onto the new hard drive, then you can unplug the old hard drive if you don't want it. There is no need to freshly install the games if you have no problems with them. I have transferred Trainz across to new bigger faster drives a few times and never had a problem, you just have to run the game once before you can start CM. Trainz 2006 is now on its 4th hard drive and is the original install from way back then, runs like a dream too along side Trainz 12.

Hi Stagecoach
That's exactly what I was planning to do until last week when somebody asked the question and was told to copy the Entire directory. I think I will stick with my original plan as it seems to be the one that is easiest to understand what is happening.
I know that on TRS2006 I will need to delete the index files but with TS2010 is this not the same as an EDB repair.

Both the old and the new PCs are laptops I have specified two 500GB hard drives for the new one so I need to copy to the external hard drive first and then to the new laptop. I will still be using the old laptop for less demanding duties as it's only two years old.
