Installing trainz on intel-Macs

I read a post somewhere that trainz can be installed on the new Intel Macs.Has anybody done this or has more info:confused:

Install Apple Bootcamp on your MAC OS, then install Windows XP following the manual on that page.

After that you can treat your MAC just like a default Windows PC and switch between the 2 Operating Systems, but there is no MAC OS Version of Trainz.

G'Day. I have one of those Macs with Bootcamp installed, and Direct X, running 2006, and it works just fine. It also runs Ship Sim and Flight Sim 2004 no trouble. The only trouble with Bootcamp is that you can't access Windows from the Mac side without re-booting. They tell me that a program called Parallels lets you go to both sides instantly, but on the down side they reckon Parallels is much much slower at running graphics than Bootcamp. Install and enjoy!!

Parallels is just a Software that simulates a common PC hardware for a virtual machine to be installed inside that environment, just like VmWare.

It is however not possible for Parallels or VmWare to support OpenGL or DirectX acceleration within the virtual machine because it installs a basic graphics adapter which does not have these features, so this method can be used for working, DOS games or older games that don't need that acceleration like Transport Tycoon, just to give an example.

Hello,

The latest version of Parallels, 3.0, claims to be supporting open GL and Direct X. But they say runs "selected" games, not all games.

There is also a product out there called Crossover Mac(codeweavers.com), an implementation of Wine, which I believe some have reported success with on these forums.(ie they had success with Wine and TRS) This would be great as it does not require a Windows license.

I have an installation of TRS 2006 sitting on an intel mac that I was "testing" at work. I need to upgrade its Parallels to 3.0 and try it. I will report on the results when I do.

Trainz runs under Parallels 3 on an iMac with 1gb RAM. I loaded the Marias Pass Amtrack run. It seems to look/run a little better in gMax. There is a video setting on the virtual machine to enable direct x if you want that. A couple of caveats: 1. I did not install SP1 on this particular machine. This was a quick proof of concept. 2. I did not try anything in Surveyor. 3. Switch to full screen mode before you start Trainz, or you get the dreaded kernel panic.

Having just had the usual(??) crash running TRS 2006 on Windows on my Intel Mac, I fantasize that one day Auran will issue a Trainz program that would run natively on the Mac. Then you'd have stability plus plus, and a whole heap of happy Trainzers. But I guess it IS just a fantasy. Cheerz.

OldBarney: I understand that any windows program can crash...How does Trainz run normally ? Is it any smoother as far as frame rates ...or better looking textures ? Or, is running it on a mac just the same as a PC ? ANY benefits at all ?

Another solution for XP on a Mac

I'm just about to buy a MacBook...my first Mac after 20 years on PCs...I can't wait to give Bill the ol' heave-ho...if only 95%...I'll still have run 3 apps under windows as there's no Max equiv...plus TRS2006. The desktop will be going later...to make room for an iMac!

I need to have Mac and Win side by side so I can move between them when working...

The guy in the local reseller (a proper Mac shop, not a multiple box-shifter) has recommended (and demo'd) installing XP under a Bootcamp partition, then installing vmware fusion, and running the bootcamp partition from there (vmware will automatically find the partition)...apparently it's better than installing windows directly under vmware, as when using his method windows has access to all the native drivers etc., not just the vmware ones.

I also read on the vmware site that DirectX 9.0 is now supported in vmware fusion, albeit experimental at this time.

Cheers,

Nige

I've no way to compare Trainz that run on any other computer. As far as it goes on the Mac, it's quite satisfactory as far as speed is concerned; it stutters a wee bit if all the 'dials' are at the top end of the line. Otherwise, it goes fine; perhaps it's best on Direct X. As to frame rates, I can't say; the Mac keyboard is slightly different to the PCs, so haven't ever had frame rates running. F'rinstance, I can't figure out how to print a screen whilst in Windows ..... it's fead easy on the Mac side of things. Question: Anyone know how to get frame rates to appear?

I apologize for bringing up an old topic, but since this one's already here, I figured I'd ask my questions. My understanding of the Crossover Mac program is that I don't need Windowz installed, correct? I simply install Crossover, then the game I want, and it (hopefully works). Will it let me install said game to a separate hard disk, such as an external one?

Thanks in advance everyone.

Eboy87,
Your understanding of Crossover is correct. However, I've tried a few programs and they do not work "out of the box"- it was a couple of months ago. Crossover seems great if you want to run Office, but you would be in for a lot of work to get other apps to work. I do too much system configuring/fixing for a living, so I did not want to try. Also, at that rate you could get the Wine environment for free and work with that. I think I remember on the old forums someone said they got trainz working in Wine and Linux.
