install suggestions

Hi Folks,

I am looking to get Trainz 2009 (first timer) and my computer has a 150 GB drive for programs and other drives for data.

Are there specific ways to install Trainz which would be good for performance?

Thanks
George

Unfortunately all versions of Trainz store their program files and their data files in the same folder tree. By default this is C:\Program Files\Auran\TS2009 (or whatever) but you can specify a different destination during installation. Most people recommend installing Trainz on a different physical drive to C: if possible. Putting it on a different logical partition on the same physical drive as C: has little effect of course. Don't try to move Trainz after installation, or to change the drive letter of the drive it's on. That breaks its Registry settings which may stop it working, although mysteriously some people have reported not having problems after doing so.

Within Trainz there are various performance vs quality settings, plus various settings can be specified in the trainzoptions.txt file. This forum has detailed information on that should you require it. There are also some tweaks which can be done with the ATI or nVidia video board settings that might affect performance.

BTW, have you considered getting TS2010 instead? That might be a better option.

Trainz 2010 vs 2009

Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
A local Trainz user suggested 2009 because of my computer specs:
Vista ultimate
Intel core2 quad cpu Q6660@2.4GHz
4.0 GB ram
Nvidia 8800GT

And the fact that 2009 has a service pack.

Hi John,
You recommend 2010 because of overall performance?

TS2009 is currently up to its SP2 (or maybe SP3, I'm confused as to whether that has been released yet or not). TS2010 is currently up to its SP1. Much more importantly (IMHO) TS2010 includes layers, which if it delivers its potential will be an extremely significant new feature.

No, I make no comment on that subject either way because I haven't got TS2010. I can only go by remarks made here and elsewhere which differ so drastically as to leave me totally confused. My previous comments were very general and apply to all versions of Trainz.

You are totally confused - WOW this makes me feel better as I have spent the last couple of hours reading forum threads regarding 2010 vs 2009, and there are a lot of conflicting opinions.

Beyond the now...

 Yes, when first installing any Trainz version, right-click on the file & select "Run as Administrator," then select your local drive.

I did successfully move TRS2006 to a new folder I created on the local drive...it is C:/TRS2006.

Because of the fact the program was already installed, I had to create the folder(TRS2006), then progressively move the sub-folders to this location, start using the TRS2006.exe & correct any shortcut items.

This prevents any Windows Security issues protecting the Program Files on your computer, plus it prevents you from having to allow, for CMP.

You will be able to navigate easily between the Trainz Utility installations provided with the game.

Here is a nice post to help you understand what Auran Trainz needs

The post link in your message results in this error message:
you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Is there another way to access the post you suggest?

Nope, you need a registered trainz version for that.

George,

Your PC specs are exactly the same as my machine. The only difference is I have the older, less powerful, 8800GTS instead of the 8800GT video card.

I am running TS2010, having upgraded from TS2009, and my machine handles the program fine. The performance isn't bad, there is no stuttering, or skipping, which used to be a problem with the older versions. In fact it runs TS2010 much better it did TS2009.

If you do get any version of Trainz, whether it's the latest or not, install it using Admin priveledges.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

John
