I am sooo lost

GaryP

So what your're saying is 2010 is ok, but what about the trees? I understand they replaced some of the routes with these growing trees that don't work right.

You are referring to the Speedtrees I guess. Auran made an error and used existing tree KUIDs for the new Speedtrees so that routes loaded into TS2010 had 'foreign' trees appearing. I think that this error will be fixed. Speedtrees are animated to simulate wind movement and some consider that the degree of movement to be excessive. The list of items changed in the forthcoming SP2 show amongst other things, that tree movement will be controllable.

I didn't think to mention Speedtrees, I like them and the movement does not worry me, I have seen trees with more movement that they exhibit.

We are comparing TS2010 to TS2009. With TS2010, you get Speedtrees and can ignore them if you wish, with TS2009 you can never have them as the code was not built to use them. Both programs have a 'Replace Content' function which works very well, Speedtrees in the wrong position can be replaced quite easily.

Hi,

back to the surveyor question:-

The downside is that the content filters are not present - you have to build a search yourself.
The upside is that there is the 5 m grid, and layers.
There are two layer categories:-
Route and session.

While editing, it's possible to set up several layers (I think this is correct - I haven't tried all these yet!)
So - 1 route layer for the terrain. another for the track, third one for the industries. This simplifies the editing because you can hide a layer (e.g. you'll only select the platform - not the tree next to it).
Before publishing the route I guess you'd collapse the layers...

It's also possible to set the season of the year - assets are able to read this and react accordingly (e.g. speed tree in winter = no leaves, in summer - full foliage).

As always, the tools are ther, but the content will lag behind.

Axe! Hi!:D

I'm thinking of going ahead and ordering the 2010, just to see it.
If the frame rates are better then it's worth the upgrade, ad I mostly build my own routes anyway.

Want to hear something screwy? I was talking with my wife last night and she said I used to love Trainz but it made me sick.
Now I remember! I used to get motion sickness in Surveyor because of the swaying movement. Weird huh?

I've had a layout with Richard working since 2007 Trainz and never released it. Maybe I'll finish it for 2010.

Will they let you purchase a boxed set, and have the option to download it also?
I'd like DVD's and a real manual if possible.

BTW, nice to see all my old and new friends again.

It's a mutually exclusive choice, one or the other. If you want both then you have to make two separate purchases and therefore pay twice.

Hello All

Don't hurt me. :)
I'm an old Trainzer that left for another venture. you know how it goes. Then work piles up and you just don't play any more.
I got a voucher for Trainz 2010 and went to the website. I was blown away!

Where do I start? I'm looking for info on what Auran did to surveyor, please.
What's this Speed tree? It looks amazing!

I feel like the prodigal son. LOL
Any help getting up to speed would be much appreciated.

Anyone still left from my era?

Gary

Wow GaryP!!

Welcome back, I don't know if you remember me or not, can't remember when you left I might still have been under the username ultimate_cof_fan or whatever it was..

Anyhow its good to see you back, I remember when I first found trainz 1.3, i used to look on your old Trainz site while I was at school and was amazed and excited by the screenshots and thought of getting to go home so I could play around with it.. now i'm 23 and i've been stuck around here on/off for many years :D

Fond memories of those 1.3/SP3 UTC days even though Trainz is so much more now and its so strange to look back at how it was then.

Give TS10 a chance? I second the what did you dislike?
The speedtrees are quite contriversal but its a step in the right direction... shame they haven't got them/it right yet..

Oh, so sorry. I love Trainz. I mean I really wanted to barf.

From above:

It has something to do with the cursor not standing still after it stops.
I'll try it again over the weekend, because I miss playing.
I gave up on Duke Nukem back in the day for the same reason.

Hey Davie.
Thank you for the kind words.
I guess you never know how many people you touch in your life huh?

I used to have a blast working on that site before work in the morning.

Do persevere with 2010-despite some glitches (and it wouldn't be Trainz without them would it).

Auran has sufferred a disasterous period in the past few years with the failure of it's main online gaming project and is now a very small operation and I think needs the support of Trainz addicts, who I firmly believe should keep moving ahead with the current versions, thus providing a cash flow for Auran to continue developing or even just maintaining the product, which certainly gives me hundreds of hours of entertainment. The world would be poorer without it, so do read the posts from those who think current resources should be directed to improving historical versions with an open mind.

Now I remember! I used to get motion sickness in Surveyor because of the swaying movement.

I've noticed swaying, but in Driver mode and only occasionally - like when I have a single, powered unit like a Dresina maintenance vehicle. Those things have short wheelbases and only four wheels... possibly the distance between flanges is a little too small, so that the car can skew side-to-side? It seems to be worse on curves.

GaryP

If you are seeing a moving, unsettled cursor it is not a characteristic of TS2010, check your mouse drivers, it is a mouse problem, not a game problem.

Had the exact same problem with Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D. Funny thing is, I was at the time a commercial pilot, who loves aerobatics, and am a recreational boater to boot!

I do think this is an area worthy of study. Perhaps the graphics are so good that the brain doesn't follow?! I expect this to become a bigger issue in the future.

This is in 2009 in Surveyor. I'm trying a few things. It's always done it.
I'm trying setting the cursor movement tighter and slower, and using the buttons to move around.
If I hang in there, I may just get used to it again.

Nice to see someone else got sick in Serious Sam, RRSignal. When you looked thru the TV monitors, it was really bad.

Gary,

Do you mean that when you move the camera in Surveyor there's often a slowing vertical movement for a few seconds? If so then I agree it's been there since at least TRS2004 and that it's unsettling. I'd appreciate knowing if there's any way to disable it.

John

I'm sure I remember this having a lot to do with the refresh rate that the game is run in.

If your monitor and GFX card can handle it, try upping it.

Smiley.
