I am sooo lost

Hello All

Don't hurt me. :)
I'm an old Trainzer that left for another venture. you know how it goes. Then work piles up and you just don't play any more.
I got a voucher for Trainz 2010 and went to the website. I was blown away!

Where do I start? I'm looking for info on what Auran did to surveyor, please.
What's this Speed tree? It looks amazing!

I feel like the prodigal son. LOL
Any help getting up to speed would be much appreciated.

Anyone still left from my era?

Gary

One of the major improvements introduced with TRS2009 is that the Autosave does exactly that - if you set it to Save every 10 minutes and the game crashes, it saves a "rolling copy" so you can only lose a maximum of 10 minutes work. Before, you would lose everything you had done since you opened the game.It has saved my bacon loads of times.

Smileyman and amigacooke. How are you both?

I found this thread with a link to some nice trees and underbrush.

Thanks, Originalwelshborder for the speed trees update. After searching the forums, I don't think this voucher is going to be used. There doesn't seem that much has changed from 2009 to 2010 except troubles. At least that's what I'm reading...

The layers feature sounds excellent but I don't see anything else. :(

Searching the forum for comments on Speedtrees will always give a predictable result because people who dislike them post about it and others that find them good, see no need to say so. My advice is go for TS2010, it IS better than TS2009 in more ways that just Speedtrees which after all are just scenery, you use them or you don't.

I have used both, and TS2010 is the best.

Hi Peter. What else is good about 2010? I liked the layers.

I have not touched TS2009 since TS2010 became available so I find it difficult to point out specific differences, I have forgotten what is in TS2009.

You have to consider that TS2010 was built after TS2009 which gives it the advantage of debugged code. The forthcoming service pack for TS2009 will update that program to a certain extent but not to the point where both are identical.

It contains more built-in content which in the light of recent forum discussions is important.

The major advantage is subjective, it feels better and after my experience with a year of TS2009 and now TS2010, I find it to be much more stable that TS2009.

I am certain that TS2010 will be the one that progresses with future updates. Remember, they were originally intended to be a compatible pair, TS2009 World Builder Edition with Surveyor, and TS2009 Engineers Edition without Surveyor. What you get now with TS2010 is what that pair would finally have become as a composite, but with many small improvements.

I cannot understand why people should recommend the purchase of an earlier version. Search for posts by Angelah, originally a holdout for TRS2004, see what she says about TS2010.

How have you been?

So what your're saying is 2010 is ok, but what about the trees? I understand they replaced some of the routes with these growing trees that don't work right.
Or the user's have too small of a pc to run them?
Sorry, I mean no offense, and I'm just collecting my thoughts on this.

I have a quad core with 4gigs of ram, running XP and 2 500g HD's, geforce card. My system should be ok.

What happened is that Auran used the next kuid for "tree" to be a speedtree.
Unfortunately, the speedtree with the same kuid (different version) isn't the same "tree" as the old one was (size, shape, colour, species).

So any route that referenced the built-in tree, automatically uses the latest version of tree - which is a speed tree.

Personally, I love the additional detail level - the leaves are realistic and the trunk/branches/roots are really good detail.
The downside is that the always appears to be a howling gales moving the trees (set in the creation program - not in the config files - AFIK).
The other problem is that this does take some processing power. On my PC (Athlon X2 4200 with Xp SP3, 2GB + nVIdia 6600 GT card), I can manage a route with several speedtrees - but dozens has a significant effect on the FPS (OTOH the 2010 coding is more efficient than the 2009 so better FPS).

I've found it was quite straightforward to replace items (using the built-in replace function).

The drive AI function in 2010 appears to be much better - doesn't need to have lots of "drive via trackmark" commands inserted - and the "run-around" seems more intelligent...

For those who need it - "quickdrive" is an option - you can add consists from a library to the track (real-time) - also create consists while the session is running.
It's also possible to add a command (e.g. I found I needed "instant load" - quickdrive let me add it on the fly) - provided it's been downloaded.
It's a good option for debugging a session (again there's a small overhead in performance).

Hi Colin.

What was done to Surveyor? I'm trying to find out but the "bitch" threads prevail.

Any more textures or tools? I tend to use the built in, rather then DL ones so my route can be played out of the box if I put it up on the DL station.

Has there been a service pack for 2010 yet?

Has there been a service pack for 2010 yet?
Yes.
Build 41491 is the original (no service packs applied).
Build 41615 is SP1 (download version) Build 41622 is SP1 (DVD version)
With a recent purchase it might already be patched to SP1. If not, I think it might auto-load the service pack.

Now I'm reading about all of the DVD's that don't work. What's happened to Auran?:'(
You should call in more often, because you've missed all the fun,
the faulty DVD’s were due to a large faulty batch which were realest just before Christmas, with such impeccable timing, it was mostly the American side of things that were effected the most, as mine worked perfectly, so mayhem broke out over the holidays, with no one to give them any answers.:hehe:
also when Auran did finally get back to work the DLS system broke down, and the help desk was inundated with calls, so all new equipment had to be brought in, they are still sorting out the new servers even now....It's all fun...fun...fun here.:hehe:

2010 handles blended alpha channels (think legacy trees, grass, etc) better than 2009 right now; I don't know if this will be fixed in a future 2009 patch, however.
2010 also supports seasonal assets that change depending on the season. Of course, as with any new feature, content that supports this is limited until people start making it :)
