How to remove the last bit of lag?

TrainzAreTheBest12

SD40-2 Lover
I recently purchased Trainz Simulator 12. I played it, had some lag, turned down graphics to lowest, and now I'm stuck with a small amount of lag. Is there any way I can disable shadows or run it in some sort of Max FPS mode or something? I really want to enjoy this game! Theres gotta be some sort of thing I can put in the trainzoptions.txt!

Would help to know what your system specs are. You can turn shadows off in Options/advanced options , when you first start TS12.

Look in Control Panel, if you've got a Windows machine. Or find your receipt from the shop where you bought the machine, that should tell you.

It will depend on the specs of your hardware and the operating system you are using, but I have also found that a normal install of any version of trainz allows the program to try to run at the highest framerate it can on your system. I have found that because there can be a wide variation of the framerates when running in Driver, this can cause lag at times.

This lag can be reduced by putting the following lines in the 'trainzoptions.txt' file in the root directory of your trainz installation;

-framerate=22
-framestoaverage=16

Edit the file using Notepad, not a wordprocessor.

If you have a good system, the framerate figure can be increased, but there is no point in going above 30 since your eye will not notice any improvement even if the framerate is higher than about 25. Additionally the processor and graphics card will just run hotter for no benefit.

If you are struggling to get any decent framerates, you can try turning down 'antialiasing' in the options startup screen.

I tried this on my system, and it produced terrible results. I went back to the original settings , and mine runs smooth, frame rates in the 40-70 FPS range with virtually no stutters even on very congested parts of a route.

Running Direct X. Railyard gets perfect frames. Go into a session or tutorial, still lag. Is there a way to get some of the default loco's like the BN SD40-2 into TS2009 if I can't get rid of the lag?

It may help if you tell us your system specs, as requested above. It may well be that your system cannot handle the game fully.

Hope it helps. When I ran TS12 for the first time, everything came up with a check mark on the diagnostic.

Thankyou for the information - I can now advise better on things.

Firstly, your memory may be a bit low for Trainz - especially as it looks like you've got a 64-bit computer, which should be able to handle at least 4GB of memory.

I am going to do some research on the graphics card, so I can advise on that.

Another question - have you updated your DirectX recently? I've noticed your graphics drivers are a couple of months old so should be fairly current.

Based on that, I still think it's either going to be the graphics card or the memory at fault. ~3GB seems a strange figure to have though, as memory is normally in pairs.

Graphics card is built-in on the motherboard. I have the same chip on my motherboard but it is not up to the job of running tranz. I installed an external card since my comp is a desktop and the lag has gone except for highly detailed maps where I turn down the sliders.
