How are Freight Cars Filled and Emptied?

I have been running TrainZ for a little over a year. I enjoy scheduling trains with meets and passes, and have never concerned myself with particular freight cars. By chance, I recently parked a hopper car under a grain elevator. I was surprised to see that the hopper car suddenly filled up. This kind of thing could add interest and enjoyment to running TrainZ. Now that I know this can happen, some questions have arisen:
1. How do I know where particular cars can be filled? And what kinds of cars can be filled in any given spot? The one I found was a random chance.
2. After a car has been filled, How, and where can I empty it?
Thank you for your help.

If you hover your arrow over an industry, such as a grain elevator and then hold down ctrl and right click it will give you details of what can be loaded there and how much of it. This can be adjusted in surveyor. Also in surveyor you can check what a car will hold by using the ? symbol and then clicking on the car. Hope you get more enjoyment from Trainz now.

Generally speaking when a traincar or industry is constructed and setup to be industry interactive, the content creator decides what products it can use. Multiple products are possible and many traincars are setup that way. A hopper carry many different products - a coal mine just produces coal. A few industries are multi-product but most are single product. Read the description on the config file to see if an item is interactive and if so what products it can handle.

I notice how you went from UTC to Trainz Simulator 2012. That is from the second game in the series to the latest! Many changes have been made since then. Interactive industries have been in the game since Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004 came out. Bob5446 is correct. Hope you enjoy this simulator even more!

To find out what INDs load/unload.Go to routes, click on the one you are driving, now click edit route, when it open, click on menue go down to find object, now click on the arrow at the top right and a list of the INDs will come up. Open the house flyout, click on ? at the right corner.Click on the first IND in the find object, now left click on ? then left click on the IND.A window will open listting what that IND Loads into a car & or unloads from a car.
Now when you close the route it will ask you do you want to save, do not save. You shouldn't have done anything that you should save. You are looking at it not changing anything.

Interactive industries and freight cars

Hi Dean --

Welcome to the wonderful world of interactive industries and freight cars.

Some time ago I did an illustrated tutorial about configuring the industries and cars. If you are interested it can be downloaded by a mouse click here:

Take the free download option.

There are also a couple of youtube videos (best watched full screen and HD):

I'm New to Trainz. I have TS12. I added the "Lumber Mill 1" object on my route. I'm trying to find the car that carries the logs to the mill for unload. I'm also looking for the hopper that will accept the woodchips. Any help will be appreciated

Thank you for your help. Danny, This is exactly what I was looking for. Philskene, I will check out your tutorial.

I enjoy operating TrainZ, but I only use TrainZ about twice per week for about an hour or so.

Ranger4919, try flatbed cars for the logs, and there are a few dedicated cars called woodchip gondolas, look under CN or UP, I'm not sure if they are built in or not. If you don't find them, try with ordinary gondola cars, perhaps. The built in Chinese gondolas with doors on the side will also carry logs.
