Help. Trainz 06 is being nasty.

I booted up trainz (06) this morning and instantly it came up with a 'Fatal Error' popup that says:

I am running Windows Vista. I haven't restarted the system yet, but I have restarted the program sevral times and it is not working >=(

Two things; 1. Are you running Trainz as administrator? If not do so.2. If you are useing Direct X settings, try switching to OpenGL or vise-versa.

I would recommend running some general system diags and maintenance on your PC too. Trainz is particular sensitive to technical hardware problems.

Try cleaning out any dust bunnies, fur or dirt from your CPU fan case fans.

Graphic and hardware intensive programss tax the hardware and can cause problems. By cleaning out the dirt, your system may work better.

Run memtest86 or some other memory test.

I've had this happen before. Trainz would run, or it would crash upon starting. This was the beginning of the end for a DIMM on my machine. A check with memtest86 found the bad memory stick, and a warranty replacement unit fixed the problem permenantly.

Try cleaning out any temporary files. Disk Clean up utilities, including the one from Vista does a great job at this.

Sometimes program icky stuff lays around after the program closed particularly if the program shutdown was not "clean". When this happens, programs will get confused and load stale data, stuff that's in the temp folder, instead of fresh program code from the program's folder. When this happens, the program will crash.

Make sure nothing else is running.

Run your preferred Anti-malware/antivirus program(s). If there are things chattering in the background, this can not only cause performance problems, they can also cause programs to crash because they are eating up any resources needed by programs you are trying to run.

Reset your video settings back to default in Trainz.

This might sound weird, but it's true. I had chocked up my route and Trainz in general as being unable to run on my system anymore. One day as a fluke, I defaulted my video settings and Trainz loaded fine and so does my route now, which used to randomly crash all over the place.

Anyway here's a few thoughths on this.
