Has anyone ever used a program called Hugin?

Boarded October 2001
I came across Hugin whilst looking for a program to join images taken from Google Earth. It looks like an amazing piece of software and I'm wondering if anyone here uses it. Although Photoshop may do everything and more, for those of us without the ways and means to acquire photoshop, this program could be very useful indeed. Also from what I've read, it outshines any Photoshop plugin by a country mile.

What it does:

Accurately stiches together maps and photos. There's an example on one part of the site showing a grafitti wall a over a hundred metres long. It's at the bottom of the page.

Creates panoramas from normal photos up to several high by several wide.

Undistorts photos taken on an angle, or photos distorted by a camera. There are some pretty remarkable examples on the site.

I have yet to try it, but there's dozens of tutorials and an extensive wiki-like manual. It's been around for a while and it has fantastic reviews.

Price - NIX.

Images from Google Earth will be easier to join in a paint program, Gimp is very powerful and free.
Hugin is a very powerful program, but it is not infallible :hehe: and you still require a paint program to crop and adjust the output image.
This panorama is the result of 22 photo's @ 10 megapixel each, stiched together with Hugin :)

A word of warning, it can generate very big files, the one above was in excess of 500MB when output from hugin (non compressed tiff)
If you have a camera and some time give making panorama's a go, it's fun :D

All I get is "Page load error. The connection was interrupted during loading". Perhaps the file is just too big for Imageshack?

You just missed it, by about 12,000 miles :p :p

Its Geelong, a city on the shore of Corio Bay, Victoria, Australia

Just to show that taking panorama's is fun, here is a 360 degree view of a lake that is about 100km from me,

the 13 year drought (and still counting) has made a once mighty lake into just a pond, the image was taken from a pier that was once sticking out over the water :(

Cheers David

HiBaller, try it again, imageshack plays up around this time of day :(

Got it that time. Very nice pictures. I use Ulead PhotoStitch myself. Never had a problem with it. I've downloaded Hugin and will give it a try.

Thanks for the replies. The panoramic function on my camera software is pretty useless as it the feature in IrfanView. Ulead's version is commercial I assume, so Hugin sounded like a good option. Another freebee is AutoStitch.

You have some nice panoramas there Pommie. Long time since I've been to Geelong or Colac.
