Can anyone tell me why the Double-track Tunnel at Harpers Ferry is so large? Saw a photo of it today on Railpictures.net with an F-45 trundling through, the bore literally towered above the consist!
Was this a case of predicting the future of Double-stacks?
I am making this route and it is a 3 track tunnel with a switch in it. But was for piggypacks, high and wide loads, hightop coal cars. But i think during the steam days it was hight for ventelation.
