Graphics Recommendations

Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded my PC so I now have an AMD X2 6400+, 2GB Crucial Ballistix RAM, WD Caviar 250Gb HDDs but I still have my old 6600LE.

I realise that this is now my bottleneck and am looking to replace it come the summer when I start working again. What I really wanted to know is what I should be looking at so that my Graphics card is at the same level as the rest of the PC and not a significant bottleneck. Should I be looking at something like the 8800GT or is it worth looking at the 9000 series?

The 8800GT is comparable in performance to the 9600. I would recommend the 8800GT, as I use it and have found it to be a very good card.

Tom's Hardware Guide list of video boards in decreasing order of power. That whole article is worth a read and Tom's also has individual reviews of some boards.

BTW, can I politely suggest that just saying "9600" is very ambiguous as the modern nVidia/GeForce 9600 is a totally different and vastly more powerful beast than the ancient ATI/Radeon 9600.
