GMax and 3DSMax (And any other modeling program) screenies/renders

Just curious,

Am I to infer that the last pair of wheels on the trailing truck is larger than the second last pair? The axles seem to be higher.

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

That is normal on most larger steam locomotives with dual axle trailing bogeys. CPRails hudsons, northerns, and selkirks consist of a trailing bogey with 36 1/4" and 45" Wheel diameters. Some, but not all, of them have booster engines installed as well.

Well done!

Well, slowly, the Maffei NTM "Hoki Poki" is getting into shape :)

Greetings from nighttime Amsterdam,

Very Nice Jan! Its lookin' good! I'm very pleased to see you're that far of texturin this model!

Greetings of a NTM-fan.

Hi bchester

That's interesting info on the CPR Hudsons , the NYC J1 J2 J3 's all had 51" and 36" on the trailing truck , I wonder why the difference .

@ yoderscoot

The count would be greatly increased if some of the hoses were modeled correctly and a lot of the details left out where in included .

But we're not trying to increase the poly count, since Trainz has a limit on them. But over 2 million polys....wow, that's got to be a new record, no?

If Trainz DID accept that many polys....i'd say roughly about 1fpm(frame rate per month).:D

My understanding as to the difference in wheel sizing is two fold. The first is to accomodate the size and shape of the ashpan. These locomotives had large fires and when burning coal required large ashpans to collect the spent fuel. The ashpan angles down toward the front axle of the trailing bogey which dictates a smaller wheel diameter.

The second reason that I was given by an ex-fireman was that the booster engine was mounted under the trailing axle and required the additional height clearance of an increased wheel diameter.

These were passed on as hear-say and I have not been able to confirm these statements as fact but they sound reasonable.

Hi bchester

Thanks :) I knew there would be a good reason , otherwise they would not design things like that , sad fact is that I'm not clued up on the technical aspects of steam locomotives .

Cheers

Ah !! but the new max exporters and ( at least TRS2009 in native mode ) can handle million tri count items , it seems that earlier max and gmax exporters ( according to Auran ) had a problem that's now fixed . I did successfully export a mesh with a shade over 1million triangles , load it into trs2009 and display 100 of them on an single untextured baseboard .. the FPS measured with fraps was in fact .. 1fps

If you're interested I'll send you a similar 3ds mesh or the trainz asset :D

Just be warned, there are still problems in the exporter. Been focusing on other projects, but a steamer I've got here (VR A2 class seen a number of pages back) has got some strange effects on the mesh from the export. I have a feeling it may be to do with poly count, but not sure.

Not the thread for tech discussion I guess but since the question of triangle count in trainz has popped up these pics should dispell some doubt. I've not encounted any other problems with the exporters .. sorry Zec can't help.

My PC would probably get a couple more fps :P i get over 400fps when im running TS09, its good to see that in Trainz though 2 posts above! Just needs texture, colours, animation, etc.
and it will be great :hehe:

You can not get 400fps in 09 on a map, you can get over 1000fps at the main menu. If you are reading your fps from the JetLog.txt it never gives the right fps as it is an average from startup to shutdown.
