Hehe..that's nice to hear and I have all time busy to create new trees. I have 'landed' on making 3D trunk in mix with billboarded mesh...

..Oak close up. Data - generated tree but all the parts are scanned from real world....

The first trees will soon be ready.....

Ahh I know that plugin. Would that be from onyx?

Correct. I have tried out several plugins and 3'rd party vegetation software. There are 3 'good' 3D programs (my personal opinion): VUE 5-7 (I have only the VUE 6 Xstream trial version, but full functional) /XFROG and ONYX. The cons with VUE is that you have to buy additional plants (it's not so expensive). The cons with XFROG is it seem difficult to use but the plants are real pretty.

I have found ONYX to be the most flexible for my use, userfriendly and flexible to create all kind of vegetation. I'm into the rendering stage now and use VRAY. ONYX have a 3DS max plugin that is easy to use and you can buy or download many different species. You have to manually add the Uv to the mesh by converting it to editable mesh.

I'm still in the playground with these programs but hope to get something out of it soon. Yesterday, I made a ok looking 3D trunk, rendered the branches and leafs, and used them as crossed billboards together with the 3D trunk.

I will use the weekend to continue this research...;)

Just a view on the 'inside' of 3DS max, new tree creation made from scratch using a tree generator....

Hi, Jan -

I noticed you had Vue xStream installed. Why didn't you just export a tree from that into Max?

:0)

I had several crashes when trying to do so:confused: but my Pc is FULL of shareware and trial versions:o , so it's not the most stable machine around.....They have released a new version (VUE 7) and many ppl say nice things about it.......

I liked VUE a lot, but they do not have so many species as I got with the ONYX. Also ONYX tree storm plugin is great to import plants from ONYX garden suite. It has a handy 'random' function to vary the items and at the same time look realistic.

My first data generated tree...

Not perfect, but this tree has been created with components (leaf, bark image...) and the trunk is 3D.

I made it with 3D trunk to avoid the 'edge' effect. The .im file is only 78 kb and carries all the mesh for the trunk....

Very nice :)

I have a use for these tree's, if your willing to make 09 versions :)

You'll even get your tree's displayed at a model railway expo, if all goes to plan! :D

I could do with this, it's very very well done, when do you think you may upload to the DLS.

Thank you. No idea when I'll finish it. It still needs uvwmapping and texturing; it'll depend on how much free time I have in the weeks ahead. I have it ported to Blender and will do the finishing work there, so it will likely take me a bit longer than normal as I still need to learn Blender ;)
I'm currently planning an airmail version and a crop dusting version.
