Generating realistic terrain

hi all,
I love Trainz 2006 and have been playing with Surveyor and HOG for a while. I have managed to download STRM 3 DEM files for Melbourne, Australia and I also have high resolution street maps and topographical maps of the area. I have been using MicroDEM and HOG to generate base boards, this all works fine. My biggest problem is aligning the street maps and topographical maps to the DEM maps. Is there a program out there that will allow me to align the maps so that I can place the objects in the right place.

Thanks for the link.

Is there a demo version of this software that I can se if the data I have will work and produce the right sort of results before I buy a copy.

There is no demo, I'm afraid. I can send you the manuals, if you are interested, which explain the georeferencing task in all details. As long as TransDEM is given proper coordinate values, maps and/or orthophotos will match the DEM. This is one of the core functions of TransDEM.

For topographic maps of Victoria TransDEM supports VicGrid94 (plus the older VicGrid66) coordinates (and MGA/GDA94 aka UTM, of course). I have tested it with the interactive map at the Victoria Land Channel web portal (seems to be down at the moment).
