GeForce GTX 980Ti

I see the last few days this has become available and is supposedly nearly as powerful as the TitanX. I just bought a GTX 980 FTW ACX2.0 about 2 weeks ago, I wonder if I can do the step-up program with EVGA and get me one of these babies. Anyone else here planning on getting on soon or what are your thoughts?

There was an NVidia driver upgrade a couple of days back that said it was specifically for the 980Ti. But I will wait until the next time I do a complete computer rebuild as my 780Ti works fine with T:ANE. By then it will be something faster, bigger, more expensive. :D

I might think about a new monitor though. Today I bought a 4TB Cloud backup drive. Trainz and its related activities sure take up a lot of space.

Hoping it won't be to long before this beast becomes available DownUnder. (Been saving up my pennies). Probably retail for around $1,050 - $1,200 mark in Kiwiland. Should be a reasonable upgrade from my current 660Ti.

Looking forward to being able to run routes in Tane with all the settings max'ed out.

Cheers, Paul Mac...

Like Paul I'm finding the dual GTX780ti, 32GB quad channel RAM and i7 CPU works great with TANE. GPUs rarely get above 37 deg C even when committing a batch of assets.

However my AMD machine has abysmal performance even with WIN 10 build 10130. Unfortunately this machine also suffers only having 8GB RAM and a GTX 530. I do have a 7TB RAID 6 on it that I am going to experiment in using as a hybrid with a ADATA 256GB frontend using a RAM cache utility called Primocache.

I'm also considering the GTX980ti but as it is a dual slot full length card may not have room in this case. So musical chairs so I put GTX 780s into this machine. Will also have to upgrade MOBO to perhaps ASROCK X99 with M2 interface. and 32GB RAM.

Hope you have plenty saved Paul, prices I have as follows.

ASUS GTX980Ti-6GD5 PCIE Graphics Card - RRP $1999
Gigabyte GV-N980TD5-6GD-B GTX980Ti 6GB - RRP $1599

I don't have an availability date yet though. A very reasonable upgrade indeed :) Cheers

Imagine the tiny fonts too! I can barely see the text on my 27-inch display running at 1980 x 1080! :)

Fonts John, You've got fonts? You mean right there on the screen?

Bob closes his 16 in laptop and walks away in disgust. 8-(

I'm running TANE at 4k on my 15.6" laptop (Lenovo Y50, i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.5GHz) and loving it.

Fonts are easily taken care of in most modern apps with the fonts slider in the Windows 8.1 control panel - appearance and personalisation - display. A few older apps, including the version of Photoshop Elements that I use for a few things, don't respond to the Windows fonts slider, and you need a microscope to see them. Blender is particularly good- you can change the dpi for the whole interface and everything just gets bigger as required. TANE manages to get the font size right as well. TS12 doesn't, so I tend to run it at 1920 x 1080. Strangely enough, lowering the resolution from 4K down to 1920 x 1080 doesn't make much difference to performance (GTX 860M, 4GB graphics memory, 16GB system memory).

Bugger...

Hi Ian,

Holy heavens, that about the same price as some of the "dual" Nvidia cards when they came out a few years back. Bugger!!! Unfortunately my piggy bank doesn't hold that many pennies, so I might have to either give up; "3ex, rrug's & rock en roll" for a while or apply to the IMF for an International Loan. :hehe:

Hey, might have too start my own "Kickstarter" fund raiser... Well, they did!!!

(In the end, I think I'll just have to search my house for the other piggy banks and bite the bullet)...

Cheers, Paul Mac...

hi guys i am considering buying trainz a new era, can someone tell me if it supports nvidia sli,my specs are a x99 board, 2 gtx 970 strix gpu's , 16gb of ddr4 2666, 5820k at 4.6 ghz across all 6 cores, a samsung sm951 512 gb m.2 2200mbps write and 1602 read, all water cooled and 2 aditional 512 gb samsung 850 evo's with a 28 inch 4k monoprice monitor.the monitor was 400.00 at 60 hz and toms hardware monitor of 2015, but it is a TN panel, but i love it, and a second lg 2560x1080 not attached to my main rig. i am hesitant to buy tane because i have read 100's of negative reviews and was gonna buy the deluxe version from steam during the sale, and also wasn't sure if the delux version came with a first class ticket or not,90 bucks is steep for a train sim if it doesn't work as intended.i played trainz all the way up until trainz 12 and went back to flight simming for awhile, and up in the air about train sim 2015 or tane, some feedback would be much appreciated, thanks

Was over at TomsHardware were they were discussing GPU load and the following observation was made
100% cpu usage and 50% gpu usage means the cpu is limiting your performance.
50% cpu usage and 100% gpu usage means the gpu is limiting your performance.

The way the code is made for different games decides if the game is mostly deppendant on your gpu or cpu.
My take away is just getting a bigger GPU like the GTX980Ti mentioned by the OP might not get you that much more if the CPU is limiting the performance..

That is interesting martinvk. How do i find out the codes for ts12 and tane? I am thinking of buying one of theze carxs and i do not want to waste my money.

I also have a GeForce GTX 980Ti coupled with an i7-3930K CPU running 24 GB RAM. I am just getting used to TANE and am playing with its various settings. I can tell you all that TS12 really flies on that card.
Regards

Thx Bob. Awful lot of money to pay for minimal performance improvement. Your experience is encouraging. I am also upgrading from 16 to 32 GB RAM, DDR3 2133. I am curious about TANE tho.

I only upgraded my card as my previous card (GTX 570) was starting to encounter difficulties running some of the newer and heavier programmes, including TANE. Constructing prototypical routes for Trainz consumes a lot of my time, it is my major hobby, so the investment for me is worthwhile. Rest assured, the performance improvement across all software is quite stunning, particularly now that I have activated all six cores of my processor (see separate post). I don't know that increasing your RAM will provide much improvement, 16 GBB is plenty. I have a performance monitor always running and my RAM averages about 5.7 GB use while running heavy scenery loads in TANE.
