Frustration

I bought a good gaming laptop so that I could take my routes with me when on a travel. Firstly I could not get my TRS12 tdisc to nstall on the laptop due to one inbuilt file problem on the Trainz cd . So then I thought I would try copying the TR12 I have on my pc to a portable HD then on to the laptop but the thing wouldn't transfer to the portable HD. Eventually gave up and decided I would just buy another download version of TR12 and that would solve my frustration but I am having difficulty trying to find buying TRS12 for downloadign on NV3. Maybe something I am overlooking after ages but any ideas or an I missing something obvious about buying a download version?? Having spent ages on this issue and frustrated that a good and reasonably light gaming laptop is not being the aset I expected.

If I can get 12 downloaded from NV3 that would be fine as I did try to install T:ANE disk onto the laptop and gave up on that one.

Have you got it installed on another machine? If so just copy the folders over.

The download issue is most likely on N3V's side as there have been off and on problems with downloading from their servers. If you care to, I recommend contacting the Helpdesk regarding this issue. You may want to do that anyway even if you can copy over your data.

Now copying your data can be done without a portable device.

What you can do is share your desktop PC hard drive. In Windows 7 and up, right-click on the drive and pick Sharing and once in the Sharing applet, pick Advanced Sharing. Put in a name, and under permissions choose everyone.

On your laptop connect to the local network and look for your desktop machine.

Connect to the desktop, which may ask for login information. If the machine does do that, you put in the same login as your do on your desktop PC.

The drive should appear now and double-click on it...

You should see the TS12 data folder.

Highlight that folder, copy, and paste it to your hard disk on your laptop.

The process may take sometime... plan on a nap, a walk, going shopping, or something else while the data copies.

Once the copy is completed, you can run TS12. You will have to go into settings first and setup the display, but everything else, including your login, and even your pick-lists will be intact. Everything should run fine.

I do this all the time and it works with T:ANE too.

Could try the Steam version, Rob (unless you have an aversion to the delivery platform). It's also likely to be cheaper than buying from N3V.

My new laptop also had trouble reading discs - was unable to install TS2010 or MSTS. Former went in the bin and latter I managed to copy onto the main PC, transfer via USB stick and then install from the laptop HD.

Also be prepared, whatever version of TS12 you install it may go in a sulk and retreat into a small box in the top left of the screen. Appears to be some clash between Windows 10 and the older code of TS12. Think I resolved it by disabling visual themes or one of the other settings in the launcher.

After a lot of time I did initially get TR12 installed on the laptop but getting it off as I really want to copy my PC TR12 onto the laptop due to my routes and all the stock I have on it. Malc that sounds straightforward but how do you do that? The two Johns (!) two other things to have a look at as well. What I also tried was to copy my TR12 on the PC to a portable HD but was not allowed to do it to the portable (tried 2 different portables) ??

Not allowed to do it?

Hmm... This sounds like your portal drive is stuffed with content so not enough room, or hopefully not failing - either that you had TS12 running at the same time so it wouldn't allow you to do any copying.

Now that you have TS12 installed on your laptop, see if you can fit your User Data folder on your external drive. If that fits, you can then copy that to your laptop's hard drive and replace your new User Data folder on that machine. During the copying, you might have to skip any data that's already installed. When done copying, all you do is run a database repair and everything syncs up.

The network router is easy to setup. You simply plug one of the ports into your internet services modem, and then plug your network cable from your desktop into the router. Since the new routers are also wireless, your laptop can connect via its wireless connection.

It's a lot more difficult to explain than to do.

Got the portable HD sorted so proceeded to copy the User Data folder from my pc (6 hours but there we are!) and then went on from the portable to the laptop where it told me that would be about just over 2 hours. Anyway when it was just about done it would not get into my Trainz 12 on the laptop as it said the User Data I was trying to put in was too big for the (Trainz) folder. So an 8 hour groan and wait for zilch. Been pondering on whether i should take off the TR12 I have on the laptop as my pc one has routes and a lot Oh and before I forget TRS12 appears on the laptop just in part of the window and not all of it (?). of vehicles I would then have to look for and get them separately? instead maybe copy my pc TRS12 to the portable then onto the laptop??

How much disk space do you have on the laptop? How much cash do you have? The easy way is to put a larger SSD in to replace the drive on the laptop. Remember to look on Crucial.com to see what type of SND will work. They come in different thicknesses and buying one that is too thick to fit may not be a good investment. Samsung SSD's have a good reputation. Crucial have a nice thing that plugs into a USB port and the new SSD to clone the drive but the software only works with Crucial drives. I'm not sure what Samsung etc have.

There is a similar kit for Samsung drives.

My Trains 12 on the PC is 493 GB (530,010,486,383 bytes) and size on disc listed as 494 GB (530,785,378,304 bytes)

My laptop storage is 1000.Folders.

So what if i took off that basic TR12 off the laptop and could I be within possibility of copying the above via the portable hard drive to go on the laptop?? It is a Gigabyte 14" gamer. When i put TRS12 on the laptop it was not in the SSD but generally.

500 gigs is a fair size, saying the laptop storage is 1,000 folders doesn't mean anything. I suspect you have a 256 gig SDD and a 1TB hard drive. running belarc.com scanner will confirm this. The next question is how much free space do you have on the 1TB hard drive. I assume its a C: drive on the SSD and a D: or E: on the hard drive. right click the drive and check in properties.

Even 1TB isn't much room these days. You should have a USB 3.0 port so you could run directly off an external drive, yes an SSD is nice but reality is the load times might be a bit longer off the external but the frame rates will be much the same.

Regarding the Gigabyte laptop John don't know why I mentioned that number of folders when I was basically thinking of the number of G's. Maybe due to being the middle of the night John! The C Drive has 61.9 GB of 105 free while the main Local Disk D has 925 free of 931.

On my PC my Trainz12 Folder is as follows..
Size: 493 GB
Size on disk:494 GB

It seems some ideas will copy files but programmes are a bit more of an effort? Now I have discovered on American programme called Zinstall WinWin and looks very simple and makes it very obvious it will copy a whole prog say TRS12 from one machine to another but is $118. Certainly a very pricey item but having spent almost a thousand quid on a gaming laptop my frustration is becoming tempting to be very honest. So there are my techy details and wondering still if I am going to be able to get my TRS12 on that laptop.

The program files shouldn't be a problem. I assume that TS12 is not installed under program files. Things like command prompt and xcopy will just about shift everything. I suggest you email me directly jwhelan0112 gmail.com and we'll get something sorted out.
