Fixed track problems after archive restore

Well my Vista to Windows 7 upgrade didn't go well (probably missing drivers, although not related to Trainz, it was fine after the upgrade). I did a clean reinstall of Vista from the recovery CDs, then reinstalled TC and TRS 2006. Everything was fine until I restored my archived route and had several problems (invisible stations were corrupt, so I deleted and redownloaded, all is OK now). But the big problem is all my fixed track segments got converted to regular track and the fixed track segments seemed to be corrupt in the object/fixed track selection in surveyor as well. So I deleted them in DLS/local and redownloaded from DLS. Now they are working, but I will spend hours putting them back in since I use them to make smooth curves. Anyone else had that happen to them after restoring an archived route? Could I have avoided it?

I don't know what to say other than it sounds like something got eaten when it as archived. This could be caused by many things including how large the archive file is.

In the past, I've copied my assets (local folder) to a seperate hard disk and then unplugged the hard drive prior to upgrading. Once the upgrade (fresh install is complete), I've then renabled the data drive and proceeded normally from there.

Fixed track

The *.cmpa file was 105MB so maybe that was the problem. It had only one route but that route included dependencies which was probably most everything I d/l from DLS into TC 2.7 (Modula City/Harlem Line, which has no built-in fixed track segments, which is why I had to get them from DLS). Ironically, if I had done the route in TRS 2006, the problem would probably not have occurred since TRS 2006 has plenty of fixed track segments. The other irony is that my Win 7 upgrade problems involved not being able to copy the local folder to my USB HD accurately. From now on I'll archive and backup the local folder.

I think this had more with the copy problem to your USB HD. A 105 MB archive is pretty small, although who knows how large a .cmpa file can be before corruption sets in.

I found like I said before it's easier to copy the whole shabang to another drive, and then installing the new OS.

At least you have a handle on what might have caused the problem.

Good luck,

John
