FEC Goes GE

Better shoot the FEC now while it's still an all EMD road! It's great news for them really, business is about to explode in Florida with most of the RR's here undergoing major transformations. We just got done working with FEC on one of their new terminals in Ft. Lauderdale that will be a part of this new expansion. Don't forget, All aboard Florida is taking off as well, with FEC expected to lay over 40 miles of brand new Railroad between Cocoa and Orlando. On top of that CSX has almost double tracked the old Seaboard down the west side expecting to shift traffic from the A line becuase of Sunrail. That's another RR project that's about to come to life, they are expecting passengers in 4 months. Going to be a real interesting time for railroading in Florida, hasn't been this much action down here since Mr. Flagler went to Key West!

I hate it when EMD roads suddenly switch to GE... I'm fine when it's vice-versa, but not EMD to GE. Congratz to them but now I have another railroad to wish was still EMD. :'(

REading the FEC press release, there is no mention that FEC will be testing or using the LNG power that will be coming on line. How ever CSX is in agreement with GE to test LNG power.

There has also been talk of restoring passenger service on the FEC from Miami to Jacksonville. Hasn't been any since the mid 60's.

if they switch to LNG locomotives, are they going to be quieter, and less powerful?

There is absolutely no reason to buy new locomotives with lower HP rating if you want High HP. They want 4400hp, they get 4400hp, regardless of the fuel. Different engine design, certainly, but on a per unit basis, specs should be the same. As for noise, who knows? Does it really matter? The UK has noise specs, so they can't add dynamic brakes due to clearance volume. We may have to add after-scrubbers and urea tanks to meet EPA T4, ala UP 9900, so there is really no way without hindering performance in one way or another.

They don't change the powerplant with the switch to LNG, the fuel metering setting and storage are the items being changed, the engine remains the same.

so, the same engine that ran diesel fuel will use LNG with the same compression and such? sounds interesting, basically same thing then.

It's on now, work is already starting on the south end there and I think they were approved late last year for the ROW. Sunrail and now FCEN joining the commuter game should be very interesting for sure!

This will be the first time FEC has ever used GE for their mainline running... I'm rather surprised by the number! 24 is A LOT for FEC... Sounds like they're planning on replacing their entire fleet of SD70s... And they'll be running LNG.

Thought I'd share!

Anyone with ACes is expected to go to GEVOs with their garbage reliability and loud cabs. Why do you think CSX has very little?
Keep the switch to GE going guys, you deserve better.

JohnnyC1,

from what I read, it looks like a lot of trouble up front, and having to maintain another source for the fuel is going to be interesting.

All the older bridges on the FEC route are double track but only have one set of ties and rails installed (I should know - I've made all of them, lol) with one exception. The Stuart bridge is single track and always has been due to its length. Spring loaded switches used to direct trains back in the day. The 2-track right of way still pretty much exists and probably wouldn't take much to put back to ready for track status.

My brother is in the business of selling locomotives and tells me EMD's are falling back, and GE makes a better product. and far more durable. EMD is having a hard time recovering from the junk SD90 they built!!!

That kind of makes sense, as there are so many different models made by G.E. from what I see.

To my understanding, everything after the SD60 has been junk. Including 80mACs, which is why it took CSX so long to bring them out of storage.
ES44s are the highest class of locomotives you can get in the states. As much I hate to say this, gensets take second place.
