Save your local

make sure you save the local file otherwise all downloaded content will be lost. Copy and paste to desktop should do it.

I've copy and pasted the local folder which i found in C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2006\local to the desktop. Opened the game, it hasn't worked

What I meant was to save the file to desktop, then when you delete and re-install trainz you've still got your downloaded content.
Dont forget install 06 then install SP1 without opening 06. Make sure you get the correct SP1 update for your 06 build number.

I would suggest a re-install, and install of service pack 1. First off, backup the local folder (best not to use the desktop, as putting too much there will slow the computer down). Then un-install TRS2006 (either via add-remove programs or by running the TRS2006 'installer', which should uninstall TRS06). Now install TRS2006 back onto your computer. Next, without having run TRS2006 at all, install service pack 1. Then, after this, copy the 'local' folder back in and delete the file 'assets.tdx'. Now run content manager plus, and let it do a database repair. This may take a long while to do, depending on the amount of content in the local folder.

Your TRS2006 should be fully patched, as well as have all of your content installed.

Have fun

I would suggest running a DxDiag from the start menu, and looking at any problems with the OpenGL installation.
