Drake City Network - Journey through the virtual country

Michael_evans:
That'd be the NSWGR(New South Wales Government Railways) City Rail consist. Its on the DLS.
I believe Davido made it.
Cheers,

Great shots as always, Timetable!

As to your problem, there are several potential solutions I can think of, each of which I'll explain. As my experience in this regard is very little, I hope others could add to these suggestions...

1) You could burn the cdp to CD-R and email it to Lance or whoever receives the routes that are too large for upload. I am not 100% sure how to do it, but I'm sure if you emailed the admins, they'd help you out.
2) Combining with option one (if you wanted) you could go onto MSN or a file sharing program (maybe even possibly azureus) and send the file to one of the third-party websites that other enthusiastic individuals here on TRS run for them to host the file for you.
3) You could break up the files into *modules* of sort and offer them as an individual download (say 3 files). We could then *merge them* into one big route (although I have no idea how to do it properly so that everything would line up).
4) There might be an email program out there that could handle the volume of that email, but it sounds pretty big. Perhaps winrar or winzip could could compress the file size a bit?

I personally think your best option is to go with 1, but I would humbly suggest you let some people beta test before you would email the route as it'd make updating any minor problems fairly difficult. :hehe:

Wonderful shots. Sounds like a great virtual network. I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the large overall roof at your Central station? Your using a lot of great content to good affect, but this building stood out for me.

Andrew :)

Man, looking again at these pics...I'm dying to see more of this route! :)

I'm sorry to pester you, but could I also ask you a few questions about the items in your route? I noticed a blue/white/teal/grey dmu? with pantagraphs at the back of the last picture you posted (on July 13'th 2:43 am). Do you know it's KUID? (I've seen it several times elsewhere and the more I see it, the more I want to use it :D ). I also spotted a tall platform light on the *naked* platforms (without a roof) in several pictures and I was wondering if you could tell me it's KUID as well! :hehe: My last annoying question is about what seems to be a fluorescent light and stairwell in your last picture post (on September 1st 5:29 AM). I've been looking everywhere for a fluorescent light like that and the stairwell looks great, so if you know their KUID's, I'd be grateful!

Patiently awaiting more pics! :D

Before going to the next chapter, I noticed some unanswered questions. Sorry for that!
However: better be late than never...

@ hoboron: the platforms are by vendel (look for FMA Platform on the DLS)
@ barfrog: Station roof KUID 106566:28000
@ gisa: I couldn't see any posts from me on July 13th. The DMU you probably are looking for is the NSW CountryLink Xplorer EB. (KUID2: 60723:116:1). The platform light is kuid 35848:32002 (see DLS). The fluorescent light and stairwell are an integrated part of the entire station complex, so you can't get these as they are.

By the way, gisa: thanks for your suggestions on how to get this huge layout on the web. I still haven't a solution yet, but it will surely not be your number one. Just read the thread "Ultramegaroute soon to be released" from neilsmith749 and you understand why I will not send any CD's to auran!

In this session our train is continueing it's run to Olympia Central and Arlington Central, but that part did we have before.

Oops!

My mistake Pieter! The DMU looked different in that picture (almost like it had a pantograph, so I though it was a European trainset [I'm really curious and getting interested in those trainsets these days] as it looked to me like a totally different vehicle). I then realized that I already had the NSW CountryLink Xplorer EB.

As for uploading your route, I've done some thinking (for the day long long in the future [maybe when monkeys rule :D]) and I think that the best way to go is to upload it to a third-party website such as trainzproroutes, or protrainz for example. Neilsmith did that with another party for his UMR and I'm sure with such excellent work, that one of those sites (or someone else) would be happy to host it for you. I would do it myself if I made a fair wage (I'm teaching English overseas at the moment) but I don't have the money or time for a website at this time. :'(

Will your route have any built-in sessions, or a tour session? You said that you had 50 or so trains running around and I'd love to be able to sit in this one or that one as it tours the countryside/city...if I drive, it's harder to do that of course. :hehe:

Anyhow, good luck and keep us posted as to when and/or where your route will be. I for one am definitely looking forward to it!

Thanks for all your help!

How Many Thousands of Hours Did This Take?

Wow. Nice route. How many thousands of hours did it take to build this route?

Hey Pieter,

I read on another thread (for Neilsmiths UMR) that Auran might consider hosting a route that is larger than 20 megs, but that you'd have to contact the helpdesk/Lance to seek permission. If they grant it, then perhaps you could send it there. Out of curiousity, how big is the .cdp? :) I think if it is under 40 megs, that they'd make an exception...

Gisa ^^

Hello everybody!

Good news: today I was offered some server space on a third party website, so the layout can be hosted by the people there! (Gisa, the .cdp is approx. 25 mb) Follow up this thread for the next days.

However: this will be the last screenshot session in the Drake City Network thread. That means you didn't see the entire layout, not every line and every station, but enough to get a good impression. And, of course, there must be something to explore for those who want to download the route.

I have spent many hours on this layout, but nevertheless the progress was fast from day to day, because all cities were build up by using Dave Drake's so called City Blocks.
It was both experiment and purpose to get a huge rail network, as if it was a whole country in which you could travel as passenger using local and intercity trains and change at junction stations.
The second purpose was – although using much custom content – to keep the framerate as high as possible. As a consequence do not expect high detailed city plans. Only station areas are detailed as well as everything in short distances from the track. I myself am very satisfied with the result, but please report me if you have other experience in the future.

Here comes the last screenshot chapter:

Reading is the largest city on the layout. It has a total of 12 stations. The 2 main stations are Union Station in the north and Grand Central in the south.

Looks Great! I can't wait!

:udrool: :mop:

Can't wait Pieter! Keep us posted! I'll be adopting a similar strategy (more detail near tracks, less farther away, while using Mr. Drakes low poly splines/cityblocks). I'm very interested in seeing how a full layout can incorporate them. :)

Hey Pieter,

How's are things coming along? You said to follow up on the thread for a few days (did you mean days on Neptune? :hehe: just joking!) and it's been a week (man it's sooooo hard to be patient sometimes!)

Really though, I'm dying to try this awesome layout out! Haha I bet you are working on the unfinished Arlington-Thermopolis line. ;)

Sorry if I seem nosy, it's just I have a few days off (national holiday over here) and I can't think of anything more I'd like to do than to play around with your layout. :D Take your time and release it whenever you'd like. Just know that many of us are happily anticipating it and will be happy to play around with it when it's done (I'll be one of the first to use it I assure you ).

Hello Pieter, I downloaded this today and it's absolutely brilliant. Beautifully detailed with some lovely grasses, textures, trees and incorporating lots of David Drake's outstanding city blocks means it could be set in most countries really, Australia, Europe, America, Canada, although it was set up for right hand drive and with German signals, but that gives everybody lots of scope to change things around to their personal preference, and it's a huge map, it's fabulous......Well done and thank you.
