Download Station Questions

Howdy all,

This question is directed at the Auran staff directly, how come the download station download speeds are barely hitting the double digits? If I have a FCT should I not be downloading at full speeds?

The only reason i can come up with is that the download station is hosted in Brisbane AU. I thought that Auran had a US based server for the EU and US combined, one that was hosted in Atlanta, GA US.

Thanks alot

Brendan

Hi Brendan,

I know this post is directed to Auran's staff, but may I ask have you enabled your FCT? If not, then it will not help your download speeds or increase your download limit.

There are also performance issues based on the time of day like anywhere else on the Internet. In general I have good luck on Saturdays and Sundays with other days being a little bit slower due to the number of people online. This may of course vary where from where you're located.

At November 23th I posted a thread named DS Ordeal, and at the 24th Spiffy put this message:

"
We are also working on moving the download station to a new server with more throughput, we realize that the DS is stressed at the moment with so many people downloading items, however we do not want to push this out in haste as this could lead to even more problems.
So it is coming we just ask you to be patient."

that seems to clarify the situation. They are stressed and managing for a soluction, and we hope they can implement it soon, because at the moment I'm downloading at ... 3.95 bps...not kbps, but bits per second. Let's wait and grant those guys our simpaty and support. The game (2009) has an inmense potential. This is what it seems to me...

Now I know that the Auran Servers are in Australia so that trans pacific pipeline link to the USA is slow. I remember reading that the link is only 7 Gigabits wide. Now imagine if you will an entire nation like Australia using that link as well as the entire US/Europe using that line. If the DS is indeed located in Australia like the Auran website is then that would explain the bandwidth problems.

I find it easier to hit 10KB/s when its at 3am Brisbane local time, but even then its slow.

For the Curious the Trans Atlantic link to the UK and Europe is 600-1400 Gigabits wide.

The comparison is astounding.

Edit: I just read this online.

"China Telecom Americas, the largest international subsidiary of China Telecom Limited, announced the presale of the Trans-Pacific Express product to meet advanced applications and requirements. The cable, a USD500 million investment of the consortium team, led by China Telecom, is 13,000 miles long and will carry 2.56 Terabits per second.

The Trans-Pacific Express Cable is the first next-generation undersea optical cable system directly linking the United States and China, and the first major undersea system to land on the U.S. West Coast in more than seven years. TPE will be more than 60 times the overall capacity of the existing cable directly linking the United States and China, and, thus, will be a major enhancement to the current cable systems between the two nations."

And yes I do have my FCT enabled... I was thinking that would be worth it. Auran please give all the people that had the 1 month free FCT another month free once you get your servers on a faster backbone.

Thanks

My understanding is that the DLS servers are based in the US. Currently ie a few secnods ago the speed was fine for me and I'm based in Canada. Previously DLS speed problems have been looked at and normally found to be something odd happening on the Internet since some people are fine whilst at the same time others are experiencing problems.

Currently with TRS2009 going live some users maybe bringing in routes and dependencies from the DLS rather than importing content from the local folder of a previous version.

Good point, but I am just out side of the twin cities Minnesota and I should be pulling over 100K a sec. I used to back when I was active with 2006 but again you might be right about the DLS stuff.

Download station questions

Well gentlemen, the situation in DLS seems to be inproving, (at least during the night in USA). I'm in Israel and now I'm downloading at pretty good speed ( between 10 and 60 kbps) ...but... there seems to be a glitch: sometimes DS stucks in a asset and then, if you don't stop and start again , you may lose hours. I lost the whole previuous night since the system stcked at a file, I saw it before going to sleep but thaught it would continue by iyself and in the morning it was there at 0.00 bps.

The servers are in the USA. and we're working on solving some stall/hang issues with certain items under certain conditions (in some cases it is related to the download and others it s an issue in commiting the previous asset before moving on to the next one. These will be fixed for SP1.

Good Tony, very good, because I just finished to download the route Kauai at very good speeds (I recommend, it's very beatyful) and now I'm stalled, as you say very properly at East Kentuky 2V1 that doesn't even start. BTW, when is SP1 supposed to be in the air (or in the cable...)?

Regards Walter

Sp1 will be primarily available through download. We will look at the size before determining if we provide a CD version.

That will be excellent. I've be Awol the past day or so with severe headaches, I get them every now and then. Usually attributed to the cold weather. Anyway I hope the DLS is fixed soon as i'm not getting past 4.58 KB/s and to download 400 MB of content at that speed just takes forever LOL

anyway as far as TRS 2009 its sweeet. Next time you guys do another convention in the states let me know. I'll bring several computers again to do what we did in Ft. Lauderdale. Not to mention it would be good to see you guys again.

I'm one that has been asking people to wait for auran's soluction to DS, but I confess it's already more than a week and the situation is getting worse. It's more than 24 hours I'm trying to download a few items for Michael h new austrian NG line, to no avail. Speed is zero.An hour ago it downloaded 5 items and came back to ZERO bps. Shall we have to wait much longer for a decent DS speed?

Downloading during beta test period was going at 35 kB/sec, but since I installed the final TS2009 I cannot download anymore. Server not available in both CMP1 and 2. I checked all my fiewall and NAT settings and they are OK. This is now for weeks. Anyone else in Europe meeting the same problem>

Yes - I've being banging my head against the monitor for 2 days now trying to download from the cart.
I have downloaded some items via FTP onto my desktop and they still won't drag and drop into Content Manager - they stick after the first CMP is loaded.
I have had some fantistic rates of download -the numbers at the bottom telling me the download speed is 8024kps but my 'downloaded today' reading is ZERO !!!
Apart from this 2009 is absolutely brilliant !!!
