Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

None of the narrow gauge passenger cars I have are passenger interactive, so that will be a new thing for my narrow gauge routes, come to think of it, the only passenger station I have that is narrow gauge specific is the Pitkin station, all others are static! Hmmmmm!:eek::eek:

I'm trying to make a model of the Antonito Station built in 1973 and make it passenger interactive. I'll figure something out.

If you use the AJS Invisible stations you can make any station passenger interactive, you can adjust the passenger height and also adjust for curved stations.

Most of the NG coaches on the DLS are passenger interactive. The yellow ones by whitepass come in 2 versions - one is interactive, the other isn't. All the ones by elvenor are interactive I believe (although I admit I haven't tested them). Only trouble is doors don't open - except the goods doors on elvenor's coaches. Also the whitepass ones only show the passengers when looking into the coach, if you go for interior view they aren't there !

I am working on stuff around the current C&TS Antonito yard and was wondering if anyone had some photographs of the area. Thanks for all the help!

What I thought was pretty neat about Antonito was that when I went to Chama (this past summer), the depot was still there, but just missing the signboards. I guess that is a recent thing, because I have seen other fairly new pictures of the depot with the signboards.

In both shots (in case anyone doesn't know), the new C&TS yards/depot/enginehouse are to the right.

Keep up the good work Tim!

Here is what the Antonito depot looked like in 1962. This is the west side of the depot.

The original depot in Antonito built in 1880, was almost lost when Union Pacific took over ownership in 1996. In 2002, Union Pacific donated this mostly lava rock and stone stucture to the city of Antonito. However the building has remained vacant for over 20 years. The depot was just recently placed on a list of endangered places, and hopefully, will be getting some attention. Hopefully, this building will be the new stoping point for the SLRG passenger trains, but not before a lot of TLC. If nothing is done, the ages will really take their toll on this historic depot.

The tracks on this side of the depot is the former narrow gauge line to Santa Fe. When the Chili Line was abondon in 1941, this section of track remained dual gauge until 1968 when the Cumbres Pass line was abondon. It was then standard gauged. Today, it serves a perlite plant just outside of town which is the only industry in Antonito now. On the other side of the depot, are the tracks that once lead to Chama, and on to Durango.

It's really a true testiment to the railroads past, when you walk around the old Antonito Yard. The D&RGW may have pulled the narrow gauge rail up 38 years ago, but tie plates, spikes, and scars are clearly visable in the ties of where the narrow rail was. IF you're lucky, you can find old D&RGW baggage ties lying around, and even some from the Conoco plant that was once there.

As for the trainorder boards, they were taken down, but are still around...and I know where they are! :hehe:

I've seen the satellite photo a dozen times, and love it :D I just wish it was a little higher resolution. Better than it was about 6 months ago, when Google only had low-res imagery. Thanks for all the photos. I've used some terraserver imagery (thanks, DRGW489!) in Google Sketch Up to create some of the buildings. Now I just need to export them to Gmax and I will have a fully created Antonito, CO before I know it!

I've been quietly watching this thread....it all looks very good.

You said you made the buildings in sketchup, and need to import them to GMAX. In order to do that you'll either have to buy sketchup pro or sweet talk a friend who has pro into doing it for you.

Well, the yard is begining to take shape!:D I'm wondering, if you were going to include the original C&TS depot as well. The old depot, is now the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR Commission Headquarters building.

Yes, for being such a small town, Antonito has 3 depots still standing. The 1880 D&RG depot, the 1971 C&TS depot, and the 1977 C&TS depot.

Yes, I probably will. I'm trying to make the route as close as possible to it's current-day condition. I will try to post some screenshots with 484 up to Lava later.

It would be pretty cool to have scenery versions of Todd's eventually to come (yes I'm patient) K-37's, meaning 494 and 495 to be able to sit in the Antonito yard. ;)
DRGW489, not being that familiar with Antonito in the somewhat early tourist days, where and what does the '71 C&TS depot look like?

Thanks & keep up the great work Tim!

Here is the original C&TS depot in 1974.

The original depot today, is located aways north from the tracks between the water tank, and the new depot. It paralleles the dranage ditch that is so plainly visable in the arial photographs.

In the background of the above picture, you can see a flatcar of lumber. This would have to be a standard gauge flat beacuse by this time, the narrow gauge's only two bulkheads had been scraped. This would be looking northward. There used to be a wye here, with an ashpit on the south tail, where locomotives were kept overnight. The yard was completely redone in 1976, or 1977, to look like it does today. The wye is gone.

Cool picture!!! It looks like 494 and 495 use to sit next to each other. DRGW 489 you should put this on the narrow gauge discussion forum. This might bring back some old memories of the early years of the C&TS for some people.:)

I've just got my internet connection back on the line, so I'll post those shots this afternoon. Thanks for all the help and the encouragement! It really helps.
