CTRL S not saving my driver session

HI Folks,
new member first post.

I just bought and installed TRAINZ 1.1.1 and service packs up to 1.3 Build 277. I love it but can't seem to get the CTRL S function to save my driving sessions. It does not give any response. Upon exiting it does not ask to save, just if I want to exit. The documents, FAQ's, forums, etc. that I've read lead me to believe I should be able to save and load a driver session by CTRL S and CTRL L respectively. Everything else works flawlessly.

I have Windows XP and other than the service packs I've made no downloads or alterations to the original program. I have serached and searched but can't seem to find what I'm doing wrong. Hope someone can help this novice! Thanks!

Alan

Bump. Hmmm...I didn't think I'd stump you experts. If I'm way of base please direct me to the proper forum. Thanks, Alan

Welcome aboard Alan ,

I am no expert , but the version number 1.1.1 and update to 1.3 build 277 have me stumped , (are these possibly from UTC ) .

Maybe it is confusing others also , therefore no responses . Are you certain of these numbers ?

Hang in there , someone will give you the support you are seeking .

Hi guys,

Alan, I am sure that an 'expert' will give you some advice soon but you need to remember that users of this forum are spread all around the world and as such are not all on line at the same time.

The version of Trainz that you refer to seems to be the very first version with service pack three installed which made it version 1.3? I was not a user this early on as I didn't come to Trainz until TRS2004. Personally I have never used CTRL S or CTRL L as in the versions I have used I have been given the option to save on exit so I cant really advise on the version that you seem to be using.

Welcome to the forum though

Andy

Hi DLR and Andy,

Thanks very much for the welcome guys!

I should be more specific about what I did to my version of TRAINZ. I downloaded the old demo last week (It includes just the England route and, for North American equipment, just a NYC F7 and IC coal hoppers.) I enjoyed it so much I decided to purchase a full regular version. I deliberately chose to buy an old version (I think it's 1.1.1) because I wanted to make sure my computer could handle it. It has a 2002 date, and is entitled "TRAINZ: Virtual Railroading On Your PC". It has a picture of a Santa Fe SD40-2 at a grade crossing.

After I loaded it on my computer, I went to the following website to get the updates and bug fixes that came out since my disk was made:

http://www.auran.com/trainz/servicepacks.htm

I then selected my version, which was called "TRAINZ Retail Version" (It has the picture of a Santa Fe SD40-2 at a grade crossing). That brought me to a screen which has a diagram showing several "Service Packs", which can be downloaded upon clicking. I downloaded the three which I mentioned in my first post. Everything works fine but what has me perplexed is #4 of the README document in my TRAINZ folder which I've highlighted in red:

Service Pack 3
Improvements/Modifications:
1. SCENARIO SUPPORT

An extensive scripting language has been added to allow scripted control of:
 • Scenario specific goals
 • Create schedules and timetables for AI trains
 • Scripted control of:
 • AI shunting
 • Junctions and signals
 • Cameras
 • 2D and 3D sounds
 • Trackside objects
 • Other vehicles
 • Triggers placed in surveyor to control scenario timing
 • Deleting and creating consists "on the fly"
2. EXAMPLE SCENARIOS

Two example scenarios using the Highland Valley layout (Cabin mode and DCC mode). These scenarios act as a mini driving tutorial for newcomers to Trainz, and also illustrate some of the potential for development of additional Scenarios for Trainz by TrainzScript programmers. (See TranzScript Tutorial doc).
3. ADDED LARGE LAYOUT SUPPORT
Removed previous limitations on layout size allowing more prototypical length routes. Significantly increased performance of large layouts.
4. SAVE GAME FEATURE A Driver session can now be saved by pressing Ctrl+S Load the saved session by pressing Ctrl+L Save game points can be added into Scenarios also.

I can't get any response to the actions specified in step 4. If I can't figure it out it's no big deal. I only paid $4.97 for it on Amazon.com. I love it for what it CAN do, and I'm glad I switched from MSTS!

Best,
Alan

Alan,

My opinion ; very few if any are using such an old version . This is most likely why you are not receiving any responses , I know I have totally forgotten .
I would suggest you search the bargain bins for TRS2004 , TRS2006 .
And be certain the package is unopened and the serial number has not been registered by someone else .

Best luck --- ,DLR

I agree 100%. Lots and lots of improvements have been made with the various new versions. I can't imagine going back to UTC (where I started) after having used TC3.

Hi again Alan,

When I started with Trainz I was using Windoes XP with 256mb ram and a 64mb AGP graphics card. I used Trainz 04 which ran well enough at the time and was even better when I went up to 1GB ram. You should be able to find a copy for about the same as you paid for the version that you are running and the download station content and third party software and assests are plentiful and much better quality for 04. I would seriously consider upgrading to 04 or better just to get the benefit of the downloadable content that is available.

Still cant answer the question as to why CTRL S/L are working for you though but dont be surprised if nobody does as there are probably very few users who can remember the early version let alone still use it

Regards, Andy

Hi Alan:

4. SAVE GAME FEATURE A Driver session can now be saved by pressing Ctrl+S Load the saved session by pressing Ctrl+L Save game points can be added into Scenarios also.

I also had Trainz 1.3 and as far as I can remember the above save game feature only works with the built in sessions or sessions which incorporated the save feature for the 1.3 version of Trainz, not all sessions had this in which is probably why it doesn't work. (this had to be used in the script which set the sessions up).

Later versions of Trainz use a different method for sessions and will not work with the earlier version. Has for me I never tried to make sessions and moved up to Trainz 2004 which is far easier to use and I would recommend you get this version which can also be bought cheaply, just make sure it has not been owned or registered beforehand.

Everyone,
Thanks sincerely for all the answers and advice! You've been a big help! I will seriously consider upgrading.

Best,
Alan:)

I'm probably a bit late here Alan, but what version of Windows are you running the program on?

With Vista you'll need to install the program, if it does in fact work with Vista, as an Administrator, in order to save files properly. I know for a fact that this is an issue with TRS200x. (X meaning 6 or 9).
