Coupler Strain - Mojave Sub/Mojave to Bakersfield

As this train gets up to speed, the Coupler Strain HUD displays a variety of numbers before settling on 71/72, which I'm guessing means the maximum strain is between cars 71 and 72. I would expect the maximum strain to be somewhere near the front of the train, and besides, unit 72 is the pushing helper. If my speed is 66 (seems to be max) and I'm in Run 8, I get a coupler break as the train goes around the second curve at about Odometer reading 3.5xx. If I drop to Run 7 just before entering the curve, everything stays together, except that later, the coupler strain stays at 71/72 even when drifting downhill on dynamics. If I go into the curve at some speed less than 66, still in Run 8, the train stays together.

The train breaks between engines 3 and 4, rather than where the maximum strain is indicated, which also seems a little strange - but what is really odd is that if I'm driving from Engine 4, the train doesn't break, whereas it still breaks when driving from Engine 3.

If I uncouple the helper, the max speed I can get is 65 and the train stays together - but the maximum strain shows at 04/05, which is almost where I would expect to see it (number 5 is an engine).

Does anyone really understand how Coupler Strain works (in Trainz)?
