Container Crane

Get over it
Here's my setup: trucks loaded with 40 ft containers pull into the yard and are unloaded. Then the containers are loaded onto flatcars for transport to various industries. How are the containers unloaded from the trailers? Are they taken directly from the trailers and loaded on the flatcars? In either case I'm needing/looking for some type of crane or forklift for the unloading/loading process. Vulcan's straddle cranes will work for loading onto the flatcars but how to unload fron the trailers is my question. Phil, this may be right up your alley. Thanks.

A lot of the time, the trailers are pulled by yard mules(small trucks) to trackside where they are placed parallel to the tracks. A straddle crane normally then lifts them off of the trailer, and puts the container right on the train. At least, that is what I have seen.

The only built-in industries which can unload containers are airports, seaports and MIN (multiple industry new). Of course, there may be additional user-created industries which can also do it. Sorry if all this is obvious.

There is also a container port built into TRS2006 that is on the Marias Pass Approach that is interactive. Animated too.

Hi stouthm --

As a general rule, in a large container complex it is just too difficult to time the arrival of containers by truck with the loading process of a train.

Usually, therefore, trucks arrive and the containers are grounded. Straddle carriers can be used or the lifting equipment shown here:

http://www.lencrowgroup.com.au/index.cgi?act=menu&i=29

From memory something like those lifters shown on the Web site exists on the Download Station.

The well or flat cars are then loaded from the container store, again by straddle crane from dollies that transport the containers or by side lifters.

The trick in this process, of course, is to minimize the number of container lifts and movements. Each lift or move adds to the costs of the operation, which is why most depots are now highly computerized to track the location of containers and plan moves.

Does that answer the question?

Phil

I just knew that you would know the process. I too remember seeing one of those large container lifters on the dls but I can't find it. It must go by some other name. I'll keep looking for it. Thanks.

In Melbourne Pacific National Rail Terminal the trucks receive their unload / load instructions via computerized gate. They then pull up at the appropriate track alongside train and are loaded / unloaded direct to / from train. I think this is what you want to do. Don't knoe how to acheive this in trainz.

After trying many different names and discriptions I am not able to find the object of my search. If anyone knows the name or can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. I'm refering to the object in post #5 by philskene of this thread. Thanks.
