Compatibility

To anyone at Auran who cares to listen:

There seem to be a lot of issues with compatibility between the various versions of Trainz. I have TRS2006 (w SP1), and I'm very happy with it. I'd love to get the next version (that is in the works as I understand it), if it offers improvements. But I can tell you'all right now, that unless it is compatible with assets/routes from TRS2006, I will NOT buy it. I spend a lot of time building a route and assets now, and I would not fancy having to do it all over again.

Usually versions are backward compatible. For instance if you have 2006 then you can use content from 2004, UTC and Trainz.

But compatibilty is not forward looking so I, a user of 04, cannot use 2006 content nor I believe any content distributed after the the time 2004 stopped being marketed.

The big issue was the improved error checking that TRS2006 has thus quite a bit of TRS2004 content is rejected because it has errors. TC is a bit more finicky than TRS2006 but not much so if it works in TRS2006 it should work fine in TC. The strange thing is that most content created in TRS2006 and TC works fine in TRS2004 SP4 basically because its error free.

Well, maybe it's because of errors then? I just don't want to be in a situation, where my routes (and I'll try to not have any errors :hehe:) cannot be used in a future version. Thanks for the input.

With difficulty TC and TRS2006 can be converted to TRS2004 format but the asset cannot benefit from any advanced features included in TC or TRS2006. The way to do this is open config file of TRS2006 asset and a config file of a similar TRS2004 asset and line by line make the TRS2006 asset match the TRS2004 asset. It took me well over an hour to convert a TRS2006 loco to TRS2004. Then there is the issue of getting permission to release the modified (TRS2004) asset.

I create in TC, but have been putting TRS2004 version numbers on, they seem to work fine in TRS2004 and are available on the DLS.
