Co-ordinates when route building?

Hi all. Is there any way to use co-ordinates when trying to recreate an accurate route? I'm thinking the Manchester Metrolink OR Manchester heavy rail network out as far as about Hebden Bridge, Stalybridge, Glossop, Chinley, Buxton, Macclesfield, Crewe, Altrincham and Wigan. Would using co-ordinates be the most accurate way of doing it without using a DEM?

IIRC, co-ordinates are a sort of "anchor" to where you route would be located in real life. For example I would like to build a fictional route based on Barstow, CA. So the place in the route where "Barlow" or whatever is going to be, that's where you place a World Origin asset and enter the real world Barstow's coordinates.
