CM2 is Still Confusing

I've been using CM2 for about 6 months now and it's still confusing and clunky. Is it just me? The learning curve is really crazy and the help file barely gives you the very basics.

Searching still somewhat baffles me. I've seen things on the DLS website and copy and pasted by name, author, kuid, and they still don't show up with CM2.

For one I want to search by the latest content uploaded on the DLS and then narrow that by author. This was easy using the DLS website. Seems impossible with CM2?

TS2010's CM3 shows the build version for all content listed, including kuids that haven't been downloaded, which is great for restricting searches. TS2009 usually shows unknown for most Download Station listings. I think there is an update coming for TS2009 to be more like TS2010, so hopefully it will include this feature.

Thanks for the reply. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to search by author or upload date. Maybe there isn't a way which is a shame.

In the help file for CM2 it states the following:

TIP: when searching on Author ID, put in the author’s UserID (#nnnnnn) rather than their username. Once the items have been found, CMP downloads further information about the asset including the author’s username. Thereafter you can also search using the author’s username.

What does the (#nnnnnn) mean? I've tried the authors userid under their profile but that doesn't seem to work.

When you are entering the user ID, are you remembering to put a # before the number?
(Just to let you know, SP4 works slightly differently when you do come to install that patch)

EDIT: rweber95, TS2009 SP4 makes it behave more like TS2010.

Yes and I'm using SP4.

Here's an example. When searching for content made by Dinorius_Redundicus I get "there are no items to display."

OK - I see what the problem is.

You need to leave the top box blank, then enter the user id next to the Author ID/Author dropdown box.

Also, as you are using SP4, you may be able to use the author's name.

Hey thanks a lot, that was it. When should one use the top box?

Do you know if there is a way now to refine this search by the date the author uploaded the content to the DLS?

I'm not aware of that facility - the only date related searches are Date Installed (on your system) and Date modified (usually when it was last commited to the TAD)

There is a way through the DLS website. When searching by author, their latest uploads are listed first.

It's nice to keep an eye on your favorite content creators from time to time to see what great work they have came up with lately. It's like going to the local model railroad shop when I was kid to see what new stuff had came in.

I was hoping one could search like that with CM2.

Of course you can. Set up a search for Location=DLS, Author=(your favourite author here) and add the 'Installation Time' column to the main window if it's not already there. You can then click on the column header to sort by ascending or descending dates.

Thanks, but I don't believe "installation time" is the same as the date the asset was uploaded to the DLS. Isn't this the date it was installed on my local computer?

The installation time shown in CM, on items that are still on the DLS, is the time stamp for when they were uploaded to the DLS. After you download and commit an asset, installation time is the timestamp for when the asset was downloaded and commited.
