Close Call that was TOO Close for Comfort

So yesterday, I had a close call with a spyware program infecting my computer. Because of this, I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and a full scan of Windows Defender, with Malwarebytes finding THREE programs, and Windows Defender finding ONE. Fortunately, they are now taken care of and I'm back to work with Trainz. However, I also lost about fifteen minutes of work due to the situation, but Autosave save my work. I've got one question: should I do a QDR or an EDR just to be safe?

In my task manager I now see: COM Surrogate (by microsoft) and it was not there before ... MS Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes, shows no virus present

I recommend running another scan with another program. There are many, but recently I found this one as recommended on Bleepingcomputer.com www.bleepingcomputer.com SUPERAnitSpyware. http://www.superantispyware.com/ There is a free edition as well as a pay, and it works similar to many other spyware programs, but this one does a good job with digging deep. I wouldn't use this as a standalone antivirus, but instead in conjunction with the others already installed.

Like you I run both Windows Defender, since I'm running Windows 10 right now, along with weekly scans with Malware Bytes. Recently I got hit as well with a bug while searching for a utility for my brother. The installer had bundled crapware which put spyware in my system. The normal removal methods didn't work, but this program did the job in removing the junk. Malwarebytes found a bunch, Windows Defender found a bunch, and this program found a few more bits of the same junk.

This might answer your question. It has to do with opening thumbnails and will hang if there's a bad driver or codec.
