Changing computers/ processors

Ok everybody now that I am more confused then ever about which processor to install, I am still going to up grade my computer( likely with some help build my own) to get a faster response. I have a HP 700n with a AMD XP Processor and runing a NVIDA AGP FX 5200 with 128 MB DDR graphics card.

Some things come to mine when installing TRS 2006 into new hard drive.
1.I assume I will have to reinstall TRS 2006. Then download and install all previously installed assets into new computer.
2.Or I could bypass number 1 and copy all files from old hard drive to new drive. If this is possible then how is this accomplished? Such as step1 ,step2 etc. Would appreciate any ideas on this subject.

Likely with a lot of help more like!!!
have you built one before?
because (1) a new prosessor will require a new motherboard
(2) a new vidio card (most motherboards are now pci(e) slots)
(3) the power unit will need to be 550W or higher
(4) and the slot for the memory chip will have changed to somthing like DDR3 even I'm out of touch these days.
(5) you will need to know if the motherboard will be backwards compaterble if you have an old IDE hard drive as most are moving to SATA ports.
And the list go's on. and on

Hi Richard,

Don't get too disheartened it is not all that big a problem. The only thing I would advise is Don't jump too quickly when buying components on the internet. First check as many ways as possible exactly what components match other components. For a start look at a good fast processor preferable Intel coreduo, then check what compatible motherboards have in the way of slots. i.e. does a particular mobo have one or two PCIE slots, does it have PCI slots, does it have on board graphics (you don't need onboard graphics) does it have IDE support, does it have SATA Raid support?

I could go on a bit more but this should give you an idea what to check before you order anything.

As for reinstalling 2006, before you disable your existing computer make sure you have a backup or a copy of you LOCAL folder. All downloaded assets are contained in the local forlder.

Are you running windows XP or Vista. I redid my comp last fall and I found it cheaper to buy one then to build and it was preloaded with vista. Its an HP and they said you cannot run XP on it. Hidden away on their web site was an article on how to install XP. All I did was increase memory, bought a video card PCI and now have a great comp.
Problem in building was finding a motherboard wirh enough slots for sound,video,tv card ect ect. that would do what I wanted.
Tom's Hardware has some very good reviews on components and prebuilt comps.

Ive just had a complete up grade and now have a sata drive but the disc drive is still eide. My old HD was eide so i disconnected my disc drive and plugged the old HD into the slot and was able to copy all the old files over to the sata drive. Look for a mother board with both slots eide and sata, i could have up to four sata devices plus two eide devices on my motherboard. Your old HD could even become a second drive.
