Can anyone give me the kuid of a very high poly asset without LOD on the DLS please.

I know there are one or two sketchup assets that normally kill performance. I'm after one to see how much it will kill performance.

Anything recent by Msgsapper. He stopped doing LODs on many of his items. Just look in his announcement forum thread. He includes the poly counts.
 
Its not just the polys in Sketchup models that kill your performance. It is the textures as well including textures on all interior and hidden surfaces.
I'm aware of that. I as just after a sample bad one so that one user can see the impact on his system of using such an asset. Especially one from a third party site that has static models. Any suggestions?

Not sure if this meets your high poly benchmark, but Dave Snow’s 'Grain Processing Facility 2014 DES' (kuid 101046 102571) is on the DLS and, while not a Sketchup model, it does have 35,000 triangles, 18 onetex materials and no LOD.

I did a reconstruction of it called ‘Grain processing facility’ (kuid 68213 27427) which is also on the DLS. I replaced the original mesh with a set of reduced-poly LOD’s containing approximately 22000, 17000, 11000, 7000, 5000, 500 triangles and just 3 tbumptex materials based on texture atlases.

If you have a good way of quantifying the performance difference between those 2 assets, I would be interested in the results because I never figured out how to do it.

Unfortunately none. If an assets description includes the words "Sketchup" or "RubyTMIX" I will avoid it. If its size seems unusually large (in the MB range) for what should be a fairly simple static model I usually avoid it.

Large Sketchup creations can be OK to use as a single use asset and placed close to the track where their lack of LOD data will be less of an issue.

If you have a good way of quantifying the performance difference between those 2 assets, I would be interested in the results because I never figured out how to do it.

The simple way that I use is the Performance Analysis option in CM.
1. Right Click on the asset in CM
2. Select Open ... Preview Asset
3. In the Mode drop down list select Performance Analysis

The speed of the resulting rotation animation will give you a good guide to the performance hit of the asset.

I used this to compare your "Grain Processing Facility" with Dave Snow's and while both struggled to run the animations yours did perform noticeably better.
 
It's more of a qualitative comparison than a quantitative measure, but I suppose that's all we have. Do you know if (and how) it takes into account the effect of LOD's? I mean, if all it's doing is loading 32000 instances of the lod0, then I don't have any confidence in it, even as a qualitative comparison, between an asset with LOD and one without LOD.

I'm hoping John will elucidate what his test set-up is. Something like a frame rate measurement versus distance in a standard scene within the game itself might be something I could relate to.

Perfect, I was after examples from 3d warehouse just so people could try them out and get a realistic example of how much they can kill a machine performance. If they have an RTX 4090 and a high end CPU to go with it fine but if they don't then don't complain about performance when you use these things.

Sketchup has changed significantly from the old days when Google developed and owned it. Nowadays, all except the basic web-based version are subscription, not free. And the older, free, PC-based versions of Sketchup, in addition to the newer, free, web-based of Sketchup can no longer access the 3D warehouse. You can find old versions of Sketchup on some sketchy websites that offer old software (a good way to get a virus, don't ask me how I know this), but you won't get access to the 3D warehouse.

All of these changes should pretty much put an end to Trainz users uploading huge assets from the 3D warehouse. I still use Sketchup 8 to make things for my own use. I have put some buildings on the DLS in the past, but never over 500 polys.
 
Yes, that blows. They charge you $200-300 a YEAR for Sketchup Pro which is what you need to use the RubyTMIX plugin. There is a 7 day free trial, but I tried it and an error box pops up when I try to load it saying a DLL is missing or something. I had a subscription two years ago and I converted some hotels into Trainz. I was hoping to use the trial version to convert some more buildings for my own use, but it doesn't work and I don't know how to fix it. It's just a 7 day trial, though. But, you can create a Trimble account for free and download Sketchup models but I believe you need the desktop version of Sketchup Pro in order to convert them to Trainz. I don't have the patience or skill to try to build a real world building myself to the exact dimensions. Some of the Sketchup buildings look like they came from Google Earth or something. Someone did all the work of photographing every angle of a building for textures for the models. Dave Snow actually made a few buildings like hotels after I asked him on his thread. He makes them from scratch, including the textures. I have about 5 or so hotel buildings on the DLS that came from the 3D warehouse. That's all I uploaded before the subscription ran out two years ago. I did create a few others that I never uploaded. Like a few different versions of Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta. A 70-some floor circular hotel.
