Cajon Pass WIP

:udrool: :D :mop: Wow Awesome Route. Glad it's still in progress.

(can't wait till I get TS12ACE SB ...... Just two more weeks to go.)

The route looks better and better with every post, and it looked fantastic to start with! :hehe: can't wait for the release! Keep up the good work!

Looks great! I really like the SB station. Very well done!

-Anything from that google / google earth stuff just plain sucks! Bringing all that junk into Trainz and the DLS was a big mistake. No wonder why all the good content doesn't go to the DLS. Who wants to search for a diamond in a pile of turds?

-Hope you can take some criticism:
-All those housing splines have to hurt performance I bet! Seems like a cheap way to fill in space. Makes the horizon look like crap too cause everything is so level when its not. If your going to use a ballast texture, I'd suggest at least match it to the type of track your using. It also doesn't hurt to use the rotate and scale options for the textures. Since when did they put fences in the yard? Are you guys using any kind of reference material? Raster maps, time tables, pictures, videos, the internet, etc? I'm sorry but this really looks life half-a*s work. It looks very rushed. There's no attention to detail anywhere. Nothing but filler type of assets. :(
-I'm upset cause this is a poor representation of the Cajon Sub. San Bernardino was my home for over 25 years and this looks nothing like it. Not even close. I'd rather run RW/RS's version and theirs sucked too. I've been everywhere, camped, rail-fanned, etc. on this route through my lifetime and to see it half-a*sed, doesn't make me happy.
-Advise: take your time. And take all that google junk out. Your making this route for a reason and if you love it as much as I do you will do a better job. Stop passing it around to everyone to get it finished. Do your work yourself. If you need a break take a break. All the kiddies can wait for it when its done. And if you don't supply sessions with it, the route is pointless. You cant expect everyone to know what goes on, on the Cajon Sub. Remember, slow is smooth and smooth is fast!
-Glad to see more pics than chat. Where's the Santa Fe smoke stack? :p

WAS THAT A P.F.E. ON A MODERN ERA ROUTE???!?!??! WHAT IS THIS MADNESS???? :'(

:p

I approve of this madness I never run proto trains on routes XD :o

Thanks for the criticism Joe. *Im glad to hear anyone's honest opinion, good or bad. All the "filler" assets are only there until I can get all the scenery done. You've obviously been rail fanning on the Cajon Sub for years. Im sorry if it looks half-a**ed, but I've only been by there once and that was on the WB Southwest Chief a few years ago. *All info that I have on the route is from random sites on the Internet, and google maps. *Understandably, your Cajon Sub is far more prototypical than mine. But, I'm going to release mine as freeware, as-is, take it or leave it. *Since I'm studying to become a civil engineer, I thought plotting the gradients for the Cajon Sub would be a fun exercise to do. Originally, I had no intentions of even texturing the route, but, over time I changed my mind and thought I'd give it a go.

If you want to see me do prototypical, send me a DEM file of, say, Baltimore, MD to Point of Rocks, MD...somewhere that I know very well from real life. I'll bet I could get every stick and stone accurate in enough time.

That was a bit harsh, Joe.

Cheers,
Fred
-In a way, yes it was, but why lie and cheat yourself about it. I would expect the community to do the same for me. I'm just not the type of person to say its awesome when its not. I'm sure a little constructive criticism wont hurt. This route just means a lot to me and I want to see it done right, within what this sim will let us do.

Ok, here I go. I know theres a lot of people here that have to have it perfect, but the main thing is to have fun with it. Dermmys Clovis sub has a few inaccurate areas on his route but he did an excellent job overall from where he's at. And I've made several attempts to correct what I see as flaws, but realized being prototypically correct is boring to me, when it comes to route building. And I've ran trains on the MSTS and RS versions of the cajon and had fun with them all regardless of the detail. Lookin forward to both releases of the Trainz version. 2 more cents. :)

Hi kimo505,

I agree.
The problem with a pototypical "route" is you are shackeled to reality.
I suspected as much before my current project, my first (and last?) "prottypical route, WP and SP Stockton to Milpitas circa 1962. Now well into it I have confirmed my suspicion. Even then I am cheating. I have about 3 to 1 compresion and have made minor track changes to improve functionality.
A "layout" designed for fun rather than a recreation of reality is a better way to go.

Happy New Year to all.

Hi Joe. Speaking of inaccuracy's on routes, your Mojave Sub is an excellent route but there are inaccuracy's on it as well. For instance there are no cactus in any of this area at all. There are no joshua trees until you get to Cameron. I've lived here since 1969 and have never seen any purple ballast. It's all a light gray to white. It may look purple on google earth and on the net but that's due to the red eye effect that camera's produce. I have to fight the purple look all of the time when I'm using pictures off of the net for textures. I have to put a gray background under it and use the luminance or multiply to get rid of it.

-I don't want to hijack this thread so I will stop here. Yes I know Mojave wasn't perfect (i was just there a few months back lol) and I know it could have been better. But I will be a little co*ky and say, "not bad for my very first route"! Just kinda what happens when you put yourself on a time limit, learning as you go, when there's not the assets you are looking for, trying to find a balance between performance and visual quality, etc. I'll talk with the team and see if we can get an update put out on the "purple ballast" to bring it to more of a grey-ish color! :)
-Anyway back on topic!

Gosh I remember back in the Trainz SP3 days, when we had a limited selection of default auran assets (i.e., 1 track USA Wood)....and now we're arguing over ballast color lol

I hope my computer's frame rates don't drop massively

Joe, each one of these scenes were made looking at real photos. If these don't look like the pass then I give up! :hehe:

-Looks like your having the same problem I am. The west side of the pass isn't that sand-y-ish looking, even in the middle of summer. There's just a lot of greens and browns. Even between keenbrook and cajon is even more greener. I'm not even sure what i'm going to do about it. Then you have the mormon rocks as an obstacle.
-The vegetation you using now does make it look better. But since we cant lay vegetation everywhere without our computers freezing, it has to be made up with real good textures. The bridge used for the I-15 looks pretty good too!
-Never give up though no matter what anyone says, including me lol! I feel that way too sometimes cause its just overwhelming esp. for me cause I'm so dam* picky. Like what Kimo505 said sometimes being shackled to prototypical routes can suck at times so I take that into consideration and just freelance areas.
-I thought it would have been cool if one of us made the route pre-2007 so users could run the route before and after the 3rd main went in. It was my original idea but already had enough to do so I choose the most modern time frame!
