Bumping old threads needs to stop...

There should not be a problem if anyone bumps a specific thread and/or post … Honestly, what’s the big deal …. Generally speaking just ignored the thread / post. I always feel that if Auran (owners of this forum) does not have an issue with it, then so what …

I bump my threads all the time, and I have been doing that since this forum begin or for that matter since the old forum (now lost forever) began so long ago.

For example: Vulcan, as we all know, does incredible creations, and sometimes his thread has not been bump for months … so what if I or anyone else bumps it, right … ? In fact, I’ve done it many times with his threads, my own, and others threads like Jan’s vegetations thread, Dmdrake building thread, etc I have seen people coming back and asking new questions and even new users asking such questions and/or posting a “thank you for your work” statement in those thread because for them, the threads are new.

I’ve done it with my own thread – I usually upload 50+ items to the download station and then start a new thread introducing such items … a couple of month passes by and then I bump my own thread, and to no surprise I have gotten posts like “wow, I never knew this thread existed with all these items, etc etc” … so again, generally speaking so what … I feel there’s more things to worry about in this world then if a post gets bump – Auran has no problem with it, neither due Mods … life does go on folks!!

Just my 2 cents!
Ish

well said..!! some of the old threads contain a lot of very useful information, if used correctly

Hey Moggy, what's a Pome ( :hehe:) doing using 2 cents. Wouldn't your post be "worth" more if you used 2 pence! But then again 2 Australian cents is worth . . . well . . . NOTHING! :hehe:

What, joke no good???

Ahhh if anyone has noticed the person who made this thread specified a certain type of bumping he diddn't say he's agaisn't bumping content creators threads ( Maybe some people should actaully READ the first post )

OK I'll be the silly one and read it again

Lately, I've noticed more and more threads over a year (sometimes 2) being bumped up, generally with a message like "Um hi where can i get this _______ k thx". Is there something that can be done about this?

There I have read it again and I still can't see a specific type of thread mentioned, he did mention a general type of thread as an example, and he didn't say he is against any type of thread.
What you should do is,

1, understand the post that you are reading.

2, think twice before trying to put people down.

3, learn use the built in spell checker "diddn't" "agaisn't" "actaully"

Cheers David

Hell Red the way economy's going here, 2 cents/pence/ are all worth the same..

^ ^ ^ Does this & this answer your question? Hmm, directly below your post, and I do it for a reason.

PS: I wonder if I can predict the next question from FC2 :hehe:

Can you? That would be the day! :hehe:

On another note, if I know users, might I ask if that "this" and "this" are two different people? Also, why put in the second one, if Mr. FC2 can see no image? :hehe: All I can is text!!! :D And "you do it for a reason". WHat reason:wave:

depends and depends on the reason for doing it. as being new, less then three months, to trainz, i have no objection to seeing things that may not be new to everybody, but are still new to me.

of course bumping CAN be overdone, and overdone as a form of trolling and maliciousness, and i'm not saying the above to condone THAT.

but pretty much anything to do with modern narrow gauge passinger sevice, multiple unit or self propelled, any and every where on the face of this planet or any other, is of at least some intrest to me. more so then then contemporary north american freight opperations.

You know the answer to that one.

Because I edited the post to remove the image, and forget that I did, as unlike other boards, their is no search option that allows to view the whole post(s).

Oh by the way FC2, if you are so keen on subway cars, how come you chose the username Freightcar2?

Oh Moggy, the reason our & NZ 2¢ is because 1 & 2¢ pieces aren't used anymore!

< stupid (grumble certain words under breath) internet connection! >

Attempting to steer/"un-derail"/"re-rail" the thread back on track, what would be considered an old post anyway?

Because I wasn't so keen on subways back in the day! vBulletin should update all their forums so users can pick a custom name that will be displayed, but their username stays the same! :n:

Actually, I believe the option to change your username is up to the forum administrator...vBulletin just provides the program...I personally don't think it would be a good idea..

No that's not what I said! :hehe:

The username stays the same but you can decide how your name will be displayed. Example:

H-Series_Subway_Car (username: freightcar2)

Slow going on the forums lately?? The original "topic" is really scraping the barrel for something to moan about.

I apologise in advance if bumping this thread from a prior day causes any of the neurotic among us to be institutionalised....:o

What has worked on a forum I administer, is to automatically archive threads which have been inactive for more then 6 months. This restricts people from posting a new post, or you can choose to ask users if they are sure they want to post a new post in such an old thread.

This way it encourages people who have read them and still have questions, to start a new thread and reference the old thread instead.

On this forum I have noticed that the posting dates don't really stand out. I usually end up noticing the date the posting member joined the forum, long before I notice the date the post was posted. Perhaps bolding the posting dates?

Edit: That being said, Archived threads sometimes and often contain a lot of useful information. Why take up more server space, and add more lines to the forum database when a portion of the information is already located elsewhere. In my opinion this forum has far too many categories and sub categories, it can be difficult sometimes to figure out what should be posted where.

Because it's the summer vacation!!!!
Our schools just went back about a week ago. And over here, most schools have a "pupil free" day the first day they come back. I know what I'd really like to call it! By the way, it's around 9 degrees at the moment - celsius that is. Yesterday it was minus 15 (celsius) at a place called Charlotte's Pass. And no to those "Sydneyites" that think snow fell in Sydney yesterday, it wasn't snow, but soft hail.

Roadwolf, I don't understand that, wouldn't it take up the same amount of space?

Okay, someone else can try & thread this thread back on track!

I've seen a few forums in which the forum software offers the ability to display every thread's date of origin in the thread list. In other words, open up a subforum (say, Trainz Community) and under every thread title is the date on which it was posted, allowing users to identify old and new threads at a glance.

I'm not sure if vBulletin supports this, but it may be worth looking into.
