building a new computer

I have selected all the components i need to build a desktop (in theory) suitable for CAD and trainz.
Would appreciate it if you could look over the components and check im not making any mistakes. Main points are the psu and the case
Case

Psu

Would the Psu below be a bad idea?

Motherboard, CPU and Memory

GPU

Hard ish drives
Boot drive/ Cad Drive
Crucial 128GB m4 SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Solid State Drive
Trainz Drive

Extra External Drive (already own) WD 1.5t usb jobby
DVD drive

Thoughts/ comments very welcome. I dont particulary want to spend much more than I am £976 (includes os win 7) + £40 ? for trainz

Mobo, CPU and RAM look good. The case seems adequate, the power supply less so. I favor at least 650 watts, but there's ways to calculate how much you need.
I don't care for ATI cards, I had a bad experience one.

Here is a site to visit to compare the relative speeds or CPUs and GPUs:

Hia cheers for the reply.

I have used videocard benchmark quite extensively.

With the psu... is ezcool a decent brand because that is a 700w psu compared to a corsair 600w psu.

Think I read somewhere that the GPU would be happy with 550W at its maximum.

Is there still a problem with ATI cards and trainz or has that been resolved. Would a similar benchmark rated nividia card eg geforce gtx 560 perform better with trainz than an ati card.

Cheers

I have never heard of EZ Cool before.
Good to know that you're watching the benchmarks.
The ATI cards can beat the greens now days, but I'm just gun shy after the last debacle. I've heard guys claim they do worse in Trainz than NV, but not in some time, that may have been from before when their drivers were lacking.

Decided that I would go for a radeon hd 6870 in the end primarily because I have just seen one go for the price I was paying for a 6850. So thats that one sorted.

Hmm think I will probably go with the corsair unit but want to work out how many watts the system will need. Whats the best way to do that? is it just look at the specs of each item?

MAny thanks

Dan

Right Il have a look now.

What will I need in the way of cooling. the cpu comes with its own fan but what about the rest? It looks like theres one included with the case.

Had a look and with that setup its saying 415w ... so personally I'm reckoning that a 600w would suffice and give me room to add a hdd at a later date

What we reakon?

I took this bullet point to mean there are two:

Ventilation Fans: 120 / 120

and the ability to add a third on the side. I don't know if the third one is included.

hmmm could 120/120 be a size...

it includes one led fan

1 x 80mm Side Blue LED Fan

but apart from that i think there is the opportunity to fit another fan one 120/120.

?

A note on Ezcool components, I use have Ezcool H550 case and an Ezcool 500W PSU and I can say they have done me justice for the last 2 years, however I would avoid them as while for me the PSU has been fine they are still a no name brand. Bear in mind I have never truly used the full 500W as I'm using low power components(Athlon II X2 250, ASUS M5a78L, Radeon HD 4670)

The cases are fine however for the money, the lack of sharp edges is very nice as when building a system for a friend I found out what cheap cases can do to your fingers! :hehe: Yet I have never had this problem when working on my system as the edges are rounded off. However there is almost nil as far as cable management is concerned. I would still buy on though if there were VERY few options. Seeing as the case you have picked is 28 pounds you could probably get a cheap Cooler Master case for not much more. :)

Never skimp on a power supply

I would buy the best PSU I could afford and I would rate the wattage 1.4 time my actual needs. This I learned 50 years ago in electronics school and it holds true today. :D

I'm using a Corsair H70, it's great for overclocking, really keeps the temps down.

Mine came with 2 120mm fans (for a push pull setup), but Corsair seems to have stopped including fans.

To use it you will need a case with a 120mm case vent near the CPU, and of course at least 1 fan.

Would you think of the corsair 600w as a good choice then?

as far as im concerned I see it as a big brand.

Get a 700W at least. 850W minumum if you think you might upgrade the GPU someday. Some of the newer cards really need juice.

I wouldn't touch an ATI card with yours...i'd rather burn out my eyes with a red hot spoon than put that **** in my rig. If you're a serious gamer a top end NV is a no brainer.....

The original GPU needs 500watt at max output. The 6870 needs 2 6pin pci conns.
The cpu (i7 2600k) is rated at 95 watt.
150 watt for spare capacity = 750 watt minimum.

You mean the Nvidia's run warmer so you can justify bigger cooling solutions and bigger power supplies?

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html

Look at the Max TDP, DirectX is a Microsoft standard so the same on all video cards, OpenGL has proprietary extensions so yes running OpenGL it is technically possible to favour one make of card over another, however if you read the forums most people run nVidia in DirectX for the extra performance.

OpenGL originally has its roots in UNIX CAD programs and as a result has a lot of obsolete overhead baggage that isn't used for 3D gaming.

I don't consider my self a serious gamer, or much of a serious anything, but I, like many base my purchasing decisions on personal experience. I grant that everything changes over time, and I know many are dedicated to one brand or another, but a catastrophic failure seems to stay with you.
